Alcaraz is playing his first European clay event of the season after missing Monte-Carlo and Barcelona due to a right arm injury.
The 20-year-old Spaniard begins his title defense against Alexander Shevchenko from 3pm BST – live on Sky Sports Tennis.

Carlos Alcaraz is aiming for a three-peat after winning the title in 2022 and 2023, beating Alexander Zverev in the final two years ago and Jan-Lennard Struff last year.

Innovative double attempt starts in Madrid
Changes being tested at the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open include:
- More singles vs. doubles action. In the 32-team draw, up to 16 spots are reserved for teams that enter via their individual rankings. This will result in an unprecedented number of duels between the world’s best doubles and singles players, offering compelling new stories for fans.
- Optimized schedule over five days (Tuesday to Saturday) in the second week of the tournament, providing fans and players with a simpler and more precise schedule.
- Reduced shot clock to speed up the pace of play and minimize downtime during games. For rallies with fewer than four shots, the time between points is reduced to 15 seconds (four or more shots = 25 seconds).
- Faster transitions with fewer seats to speed up the pace of play.
- Free movement of fans around the arena during the game, making the on-site experience even more comfortable.
