Dermot Mulroney Reveals the Rom-com Advice He Gave Glen Powell

Dermot Mulroney wanted Glen Powell Take romantic comedies seriously.

In an interview with The New York TimesMulroney reveals the words of wisdom he imparted to him Everyone but you co-star before filming began. Mulroney’s advice harkens back to his own romantic comedy days when he starred alongside him Julia Roberts in the 1997 film My best friend’s weddingwhich had great box office success at the time.

“I was sitting there waiting for the purchase gift that was supposed to come with being in a popular movie, and instead I didn’t work for probably a year,” Mulroney recalls. “I put it down to the fact that I was so tiny on the poster, the little guy on the cake. I thought, ‘Gosh, guys, if you had made me a little taller, maybe I could have gotten a job.'”

So, after that Everyone but you Occupation observed My best friend’s wedding All these years later, Mulroney knew exactly what he wanted to say to the actor in the new romantic comedy.

“I didn’t want him to do what I did, which was to minimize the importance of something that might feel a little light or a little fluffy when you do it,” Mulroney says. “‘What these films mean to people,’ I said to Glen, ‘will take decades.’ It’ll last until you’re gone, in a way that the other cool stuff he does might not. It has a different type of absorption.

Powell agreed with this sentiment, telling the outlet: “For some reason, the male lead in the romantic comedy has been reduced to a brooding male model who occasionally smiles at the girl across the room, but for me, if you …” If you’re a man and you make a romantic comedy look cool, you’ve totally screwed up.

In the wake of Everyone but youThe success was due in large part to Powell Chemistry on and off screen with Sydney Sweeney – Fans can’t wait to see the duo team up again on screen.

This is currently being discussed, as is a possible film reunion with Mulroney and Roberts.

“I would give anything to be with Julia again,” says Mulroney Just. “We’re definitely trying. We will do everything that everyone can do.”

Mulroney’s interest in reuniting with Roberts is nothing new. Already in December the actor said ET“I would love to work with her any day of the week, month, or year… If they put this story together, I’ll definitely be there.”

Regardless of whether Mulroney gets to star in a new film alongside Roberts, he was excited to dive back into the world of romantic comedies, albeit not as the lead, but as the father of Sweeney’s character Bea.

“I’m glad I’m still in the romantic comedy business,” he told ET. “It’s been a rocky road for some time. It’s harder to make films, it’s difficult to find an audience… It’s an R-rated romantic wedding film… what more could you want?”
