Would You Cruise the Country in This ’97 Toyota Land Cruiser for $16,500?

While a new retro-styled Land Cruiser is on the market, today’s Good price or no dice The J80 proves that there’s still a lot to like when it comes to rear-end retro models. Let’s find out how much we like the price of this one.

The 2017 Jaguar F-Type Convertible that we watched yesterday had our collective spider senses tingling. The asking price of $16,800 was about ten thousand below the trend of similar models, making it either the best deal on the market or a scam worthy of a Nigerian prince drowning in cash. Most of you called it the latter, and so it didn’t deserve praise and a rush from buyers, but rather the ad being removed from Facebook and a 65 percent no-dice loss here. Lesson learned, I suppose.

The traditional 40th anniversary gift is the ruby. So it seems that Toyota has missed an opportunity with today 1997 Land Cruiser 40th Anniversary Edition by not offering the commemorative model in a corresponding ruby red metallic paint. Instead, they were available in either Antique Sage Pearl, like here, or Emerald Green. According to the Internet, a total of 4,774 40th Anniversary Land Cruisers were built exclusively for the US market.

Externally, the 40th Anniversary Edition can be recognized by stickers on the front fenders, specially painted alloy wheel cutouts, running boards and roof racks attached to the port side walls and blackened emblems. The anniversary celebration continues inside with special two-tone leather upholstery, embroidered floor mats and a serial number plaque on the console.

This one seems to still have all the special edition items. It also appears to be in remarkably good condition for its age and the 231,000 miles it has covered in that time.

According to the ad, this clean, titular truck is completely rust-free and in working order. Everything seems to be standard except for the switch to a modern double-DIN stereo head unit with rearview camera and available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Everything else seems solid Toyota, right down to the all-wheel drive, four-speed automatic, and 4.0-liter 3F-E inline-six making 150 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. The ad states that the engine works “excellent” and even claims that the truck is in excellent condition overall.

The pictures prove this and show no fading of the paint or cracks in the upholstery, just as the seller claims. This truck even has the desirable third-row seats that fold into the sides of the bed when not in use. There’s no information in the ad about the age of the large, knobby Yokohama tires, but at least they look good in the pictures. The chassis looks just as tidy.

As we all know, the Land Cruiser has a bit of a fan base. This has caused prices to rise above the levels they could reach if the following people weren’t so fanatical. Not only does this example appear to be in better than average condition for its age and use, but it’s also a 40th anniversary edition, which… well, admittedly doesn’t mean all that much. Still, it’s a good bit of party banter if you only ever hang out with other car nerds.

What could such a package be worth?

The seller is asking $16,500 for the truck and this time I don’t think it’s a scam. What do you think? Does the $16,500 price tag for this anniversary edition make you want to open the champagne? Or would you rather have the rubies for that much?

You decide!
