Nissan Revives the Evalia Name with an Electric 7-seater Townstar Van

  • The Evalia brand van is based on the long version of the Nissan Townstar.
  • The interior is available as a five or seven seater with folding, sliding and removable seats.
  • The Nissan Townstar Evalia is available with electric and petrol engines, with no diesel option.

Nissan has revived the Evalia nameplate in Europe with a new version of the Townstar. This model is closely linked to the Renault Kangoo and the compact van twins Mercedes Citan/T-Class. It comes in a long-wheelbase configuration with five- or seven-seat options and is available with either all-electric or gasoline powertrains.

The Nissan Townstar Evalia serves as a counterpart to the Renault Grand Kangoo and replaces the aging e-NV200. It is based on the L2 body style of the Townstar LCV, which premiered in summer 2023. This configuration features an extended wheelbase of 3,100 mm (122.0 in), making it 384 mm (15.1 in) longer than the standard L1 version.

The additional length provides enough space in the cabin for passengers and their belongings, making it suitable for large families. It offers a spacious cabin available in either five or seven seater configurations. The second and third row seats are sliding, folding and removable, allowing for a significant cargo area of up to 3,750 liters (132.4 cubic feet). Based on the Renault counterpart, trunk space in the seven-seater configuration is said to be around 500 liters (17.7 cubic feet).

As Nissan points out, the Townstar Evalia is large enough to carry your vacation luggage, carry bulky tools/equipment, or even move. Additionally, the 49 liters (1.73 cubic feet) of front cabin storage space increases its practicality when you use it as a people mover.

The company boasts “best-in-class cabin noiselessness,” although we’re skeptical there will be a significant difference compared to mechanically comparable vans. Safety features include systems such as Intelligent Around View Monitor, Blind Spot Warning and Lane Keeping Assist, but compared to the 14 available ADAS in the Renault Kangoo, the selection seems more limited.

The Nissan Townstar Evalia is available in both EV and ICE versions. The electric vehicle has a single electric motor with an output of 120 HP (90 kW / 122 PS) and a torque of 245 Nm (181 lb-ft), matching Renault’s E-Tech brand vans. Likewise, the 45 kWh battery is good for a range of up to 265 km (165 miles) and is compatible with 80 kW DC charging, which goes from 15 to 80 percent in 37 minutes.

The internal combustion engine version has a turbocharged 1.3 liter petrol engine with an output of 128 PS (96 kW / 130 hp). Interestingly, Nissan has decided not to offer a diesel option, which is likely due to the strict emissions regulations in Europe.

In addition to the Renault Grand Kangoo, the Nissan Townstar Evalia’s competitors also include the long versions of the Citroen Berlingo, the Peugeot Rifter, the Opel Combo Life and the Toyota ProAce City as quadruplets from Stellantis as well as the Ford Tourneo Connect and the VW Caddy Maxi twins.
