Pro-Russian Troops Appear to Be Using Motorcycles to Outwit Drones and Attack Ukrainian Positions

  • Pro-Russian separatist soldiers have apparently attacked Ukrainian positions on motorcycles.

  • A Russian-backed battalion from the breakaway Luhansk People’s Republic posted the video.

  • Russian forces have had to find increasingly inventive ways to outwit Ukrainian drone attacks.

Pro-Russian soldiers from a separatist militia have published footage on social media that appears to show them attacking Ukrainian positions on fast motorcycles.

The maneuver was apparently carried out by militia forces from the Zarya Battalion in the Luhansk region. It underscores the adaptation of Russian armed forces to the ongoing challenges and threats posed by Ukrainian first-person view (FPV) attack drones.

In the video, several troops can be seen on motorcycles driving over rough terrain. According to the post, the Russian attack was successful.

Business Insider was unable to independently verify the location or time of the recordings.

Using motorcycles that do not provide protection for the rider can be very risky. In an incident late last year, Russian air defense troops riding on motorcycles occurred in Krynky in Ukraine’s Kherson region were persecuted and killed (The video of the strike contains graphic images) from a Ukrainian first-person view drone loaded with explosives.

However, pro-Kremlin Russian military reporter Alexander Sladkov wrote on Telegram that this latest motorcycle unveiling would make the motorcycle the “most popular means of transportation” for Russian forces on the front lines in the coming months.

More broadly, this video follows a broader attempt by Russian forces to counter the increasing use of drones by Ukrainian soldiers by increasing speed and movement to make it harder for Ukrainian drones to attack them, according to online defense magazine Army Recognition.

Now in the third year of Russia’s full-scale invasion, FPV drones have become ubiquitous on the battlefield. Many of these drones can carry several pounds of explosives.

Russian forces have had to find increasingly inventive ways to avoid attacks while simultaneously carrying out attacks on Ukrainian positions.

In March, videos posted on social media appeared to show Russia using open golf cart-like vehicles near the Ukrainian front.

A video appeared to show a Russian tank column below several Desertcross 1000-3 off-road vehicles, Forbes reported that they were attacking Ukrainian positions in Donetsk Oblast.

According to Forbes, the vehicles were used to transport infantry to the front lines, and the video shows them being hit by grenades and explosives dropped by drones.

The video ends with footage of the open vehicles destroyed in the mud.

Russian troops were previously seen using quad bikes to attack Ukrainian positions, according to reports.

Ukrainian soldiers at the front near the village of Robotyne said CNN that Russian troops used the four-wheeled vehicles to attack Ukrainian positions at night, typically with three or four soldiers on each bike.
