Jon Bon Jovi on Why the Time Was Right for a Documentary (Exclusive)

Jon Bon Jovi says the upcoming documentary, which looks back on his band, is four decades in the making.

The 62-year-old rock legend recently sat down with ET’s Nischelle Turner at iHeart Studios in Los Angeles to discuss his new Hulu series. Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Storyand why all group members decided to participate in this particular project.

“The 40th,” he said of the band’s milestone anniversary in 2023. “It’s a round number, you know? I mean, I think 40 years is worth looking back on… 50? I think at 50, [I] I’m kind of wondering, ‘Am I going to make it?'”

He added: “It was around the 38th anniversary when these thoughts came to mind and I thought, ‘Time to archive things, time to think about a documentary, time to think about what the plan is’ and all that came together.”

The band has appeared in other films and documentaries, but the upcoming four-part show — streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on April 26 — marks the first time that all the major players come together to paint the big picture of Bon Jovi .

While some artists and bands – especially those who have had their fair share of ups and downs over the years – may find it difficult to work on a retrospective series like this thank you good nightthe “Livin’ on a Prayer” rocker tells ET that it was easier than some might think, since he’s a man with very few regrets.

“It wasn’t difficult for a number of reasons,” he said. “One is that I have very few regrets. Mistakes are part of life and part of the journey.”

It also helped, he says, that director Gotham Chopra had the creative ability to make it the way he wanted it, and that gave him an inherent sense of security during filming and even while promoting the final result.

“Because I didn’t have any creative control over the editing, I really didn’t want a puff piece, and I gave the director and the producer the opportunity to make this film – I focused more on the archiving, I focused more on that, a new record “I’ve been focusing more on my health,” Jon noted. “Honestly, [I’ll] Look into your eyes and tell yourself, I haven’t finished watching the four episodes yet.

In February, Jon spoke at a Television Critics Association event, where he opened up for the first time about why the 40th anniversary was the best time for them to film and how it felt like a major turning point for Bon Jovi as a band. The group is preparing to release its 16th studio album. Foreveron June 7 after a break following the frontman’s vocal cord surgery in 2022.

“I wanted to document what happened in my past with a vision for the future,” Jon shared in February. The cutting-edge procedure he underwent two years ago helped ease the strain on his vocal cords and reverse some of the deterioration his voice had suffered over his 40-year career.

In his new interview with ET, he said addressed its work-in-progress recovery status and said he was doing the most intense form of “singing therapy” he could do. He said the band’s legacy meant too much to give up.

“I work hard at it every day,” Jon shared. “Nothing else matters until I work on getting better. At this point it is up to God. I did everything I could do.”
