1 Month Review of the G80 M3 Comp (from a 911 GTS)

It’s been a little over a month with the G80 M3 Comp, and I’ll be posting a video review on my fledgling YT channel at some point (I’ll edit this post later), but for now I just wanted to hit a few highlights…

Previous Sports/Enthusiast Car Ownership/Experience:

-I owned a few different E46 M3s, the E36 M3 and an F80 Comp and drove the other generations quite a bit. Several examples of the later generation TC 3 series, a 5.0 Mustang etc. Most recently a 991.2 911 GTS.

G80 M3 Comp ADVANTAGES (IMHO):

– Extremely comfortable car for getting in and out of, driving, daily life, etc.
– Aesthetically beautiful car. I love the profile, and I “got past” the front end years ago and now actually think it fits the car well. Aggressive looking posture, sexy, stylish and luxurious at the same time.
-The technology is excellent and a big step forward over the Porsche 991.2. I love the larger iDrive screen, the lighting options, the layout, etc. I still occasionally get a weird feeling when the radio switches to other options and/or the screen is a little “obsessed”, but that could be my own idiocy lay
-The power is truly unreal. If I think It’s ready to give it away, it’s just crying out for more. An absolute beast on the straight/highway.
-I am very impressed with the steering, both in general and when entering and exiting corners. Well, it’s definitely NOT the 911 GTS in terms of precision, sharpness and feel, but for the size of this car and the class it’s in, I think it’s really excellent. I’ve heard from some that they felt the steering was too “numb” or there was too much understeer, but in most cases I didn’t experience this with my car (with Pilot 4S). For a heavy, large sedan with a huge engine, it drives wonderfully.
-Brakes (we’ll get to the noise later, lol) are incredibly grippy, almost frightening M brakes have always been great, but these seem a bit extravagant.
– Overall there are a lot of good things to say about this car. A great everyday driver that is undoubtedly a lot of fun.

Disadvantages of the G80 M3 Comp:

-The squealing of brakes I mean, I’ve seen all the videos, own a number of other M cars, etc., so I’m very familiar with the bedding process, excessive brake dust, and “driving it fast a few times almost completes it,” yadda yadda yadda . After trying the last method, I thought I had “solved” the problem shortly after purchasing the car, but… no. As others have written, it comes back immediately For a $90,000+ car, it just seems absurd that they can’t source materials (which other vendors apparently have) and pull off a setup that doesn’t sound like a school bus screeching to a stop at a stoplight , lol. I will switch to iSweeps as soon as possible.
– Gas mileage isn’t that bad from what I remember from the V8 M3 when I drove it fairly extensively. but it’s not great Having said that (in my best Larry David voice), I knew what I was signing up for, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this thirsty (I’d say estimates are 20% more thirsty than with the GTS … but it’s anything but scientific lol)
-The gearbox is certainly not PDK precise, but overall it’s fine, even when I’m leaving parking lots on uneven surfaces or sometimes when I’m in traffic and just tap the throttle to move forward driving, I feel a strong “chunky jerk”. Far from buttery smooth, but the shifts are precise and quick when you get in, so it’s not a train wreck

Overall rating (so far after 1 month of ownership), scale from 1 to 10 for each:

1. Power/Power = 9
2. Styling = 8
3. Handling = 8
4. Brakes = 7.5 (maybe a 9 if it wasn’t for the insane squealing, lol)
5. Comfort = 8.5
6. Technology = 8
7. Efficiency = 6.5
8. Daily driver capability (storage size, ease of access, etc.) = 9
9. Passenger comfort = 9 (wife is overall enthusiastic)
10. Smile factor (how much do I smile and feel happy when I drive it… a number that will certainly increase when I change the brake pads ) = 8.5

Overall rating for 1 month = 8.2

I’m really enjoying the car, and while it’s not quite the machine that the 911 was, it’s a wonderful car for the purpose I’ll be using it for and just general everyday driving
