Watnick – owner of Los Angeles boutique LILY et Cie – shared that the wheels in Roach’s head started turning several months ago, but that the starlet who would later wear the dress only had her first fitting a few weeks ago had.
“We discussed clothes, showed pieces, had a good time in the store and when he left, I actually had no idea that he had found what he thought was the right dress for Zendaya,” she said of her first encounter with Roach, 45 .
About the first fitting, the shop owner said: “It was beautiful, easy, fun and comfortable. She tried on a dress and then we waited about a week to find out it was actually what she wanted to wear.”
The dress, a Givenchy Haute Couture by John Galliano from the Spring-Summer 1996 collection, caught the eye of Roach, who in turn showed it to Zendaya and saw the vision together. Watnick says that while she doesn’t typically work with stylists — she likes to work directly with the sources themselves — she was willing to make an exception for Roach and Zendaya, who she says are up-and-coming fashion icons.
“I think together they really create an incredible fashion landscape,” she added. “They must get along very well.”
While the dress itself was a story in its beauty and stature, the LA-based boutique owner took a moment to acknowledge the very special meaning she placed in choosing a piece from Givenchy’s haute couture collection Year 1995 took place.
