White LED Headlights for Aftermarket: Gujarat Transport Department to Take Legal Action

Modifications of any kind to your vehicle are considered illegal by the Indian authorities. However, one type of modification that many people get away with is the lights. For better visibility at night, people often upgrade their vehicles’ headlights. However, not all of them do this in a scientific manner. According to reports, the Gujarat transport department has now issued a directive stating that the installation of aftermarket LED white light headlights in cars is banned and the authorities will take action against the owners who have installed these headlights.

We have not yet seen a copy of this policy issued by authorities. According to the report, the cars equipped with LED headlights from the factory are safe; However, people who upgrade the standard yellow light in their car with retrofitted bright LED units will face penalties. The Ahmedabad RTO has now launched a campaign targeting such vehicles with LED lights.

Retrofitted LED lights are actually a serious problem on our roads. Many people who install these lights only care about brightness. These lights often pose a danger to other road users. They completely block the view of oncoming drivers. This often leads to accidents. The authorities have directed all RTOs under the commissioner’s jurisdiction to carry out enforcement action and submit a detailed report on the action.

The police would not only take action against the car owners who install these lights but also raid accessory shops selling such aftermarket lights.

The LED headlights offered ex works with the vehicle are tuned and positioned so that they are not too bright or impair the visibility of other road users. To solve this problem, many manufacturers offer halogen lamps for high beam and LEDs for low beam. Many people who install such LED lights do not direct the beam of light correctly, which has an impact on other road users.

Compared to the traditional halogen bulbs in our cars, the LED headlights produce blue-white light. These lamps may not be as powerful as the halogen lamps. However, they are still harder on the human eye compared to yellow halogen lamps.

In many parts of our country, especially if you travel to rural areas where there is less or no light on the road, such LED lights become a problem. When driving on a single-lane road, people use high beams to improve visibility, which affects the visibility of road users coming from the opposite direction.

Additionally, we are seeing an increasing trend among some drivers to flash their headlights after driving behind a smaller vehicle. This often bothers the driver and also the bright LED lights reflected from the ORVMs and IRVMs completely blind the driver.

Recently, we came across a video in which a Maruti Alto driver gave a befitting reply to a Creta driver who had been driving behind him flashing his LED headlights. The Alto driver switched on a set of rear-facing LED lights that he had installed on the roof of the hatchback. This gave the Creta driver a taste of his own medicine and stopped flashing the lights.
