Toyota is Building a New Three-row Electric SUV in Indiana

  • Toyota has announced plans to build an all-new three-row electric SUV in Indiana.
  • The automaker is investing $1.4 billion in the plant and will add a new battery pack assembly line.
  • Little is known about the model, but the vehicle is different from the previously announced three-row electric vehicle that will enter production in 2025.

After a slow start, Toyota is betting on electric vehicles and is preparing to offer a range of different models. As part of this effort, the company just announced plans to invest $1.4 billion in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana.

Toyota said the funds will support production of an “all-new, three-row battery-electric SUV” at its Princeton plant. The company didn’t go into many details, but the money will be used to upgrade the plant’s infrastructure as well as add a new battery pack assembly line. The latter will use components from Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina, which is scheduled to come online in 2025.

The investment will create up to 340 new jobs and Toyota said these will be “high quality” and “stable in the long term”. That’s not much, but it’s safe to assume that orders will be focused on battery and electric crossover production.

While Toyota isn’t saying much at this point, the automaker confirmed that the mystery three-row crossover is “separate” from the previously announced three-row electric vehicle being built in Kentucky. This particular model is scheduled to go into production next year, but the company has not announced a time frame for the Indiana SUV.

This leaves many questions unanswered, but Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana currently builds the Highlander, Grand Highlander and Sienna models, as well as the Lexus TX. The company employs more than 7,500 people at the factory and wages for production team members start at $22.75 per hour.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb praised the news, releasing a statement saying, “Indiana and Toyota have a nearly 30-year partnership that has provided job stability and economic opportunity in Princeton and the surrounding southwest Indiana region for decades .”

He added, “Today’s incredible announcement demonstrates once again how important our state’s pro-business environment, focus on long-term success and access to a qualified workforce are to companies looking to expand and be profitable well into the future.” Indiana is pleased “Proud to continue to be at the center of the future of mobility.”
