The Proposed Change to the F1 Points System for 2025 Needs to Be Discussed in More Detail Before a Decision is Made

Formula 1 stakeholders have postponed further discussion of a proposal to extend the 2025 points standings until later this year.

An initial proposal, believed to have been put forward by one of the sport’s 10 teams, to adjust the current structure so that points fall to 12th place instead of 10th, became the first at Thursday’s F1 Commission meeting in Geneva Discussion presented.

A vote on this issue was not expected at this early stage.

In a statement from the FIA following the conclusion of the meeting in Geneva, which was attended by the sport’s most senior figures either in person or remotely, the F1 Board of Directors said: “Members of the Commission discussed a proposal for changes to the distribution of championship points.” .

“It was agreed that further analysis of the proposed changes is required with a view to a proposal to be submitted to the F1 Commission in July.”

Lance Stroll and Kevin Magnussen are in an intense battle to get to the back of the field at the Chinese Grand Prix

The existing Formula 1 points structure, which has been in effect since 2010, stipulates that points for the Grand Prix are awarded up to tenth place in a distribution of 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 .

The proposal to also give points to 11th and 12th place would result in a split of 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1, with the current distribution from eighth place would be adjusted downwards.

The matter has already sparked a debate in Formula 1.

He expressed his opposition to the plan: Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle posted on X: “Formula 1 World Championship points have to be hard fought for and valued. Valuable.”

“Not some sort of fluke where everyone wins a prize.”

However, fellow commentator David Croft advocates going even beyond the top 12 points list.

“I don’t think giving points to 11th and 12th places goes far enough,” said Croft.

“If you finish, I would like to see points up to 20th place.”

Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft on whether more sprint races should be added to the calendar and the proposal to increase points positions in 2025.

In the first five races of the 2024 season, the five best teams – Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin – together secured 88 percent of the top 10 places, with only Haas (four points) and RB (two) having each other have won the points so far.

Williams, Alpine and Sauber all have zero points, their positions in the constructors’ championship being determined instead by their respective highest race results.

What else did the F1 Commission discuss?

The F1 Commission, which brings together representatives from all ten teams, the FIA and Formula 1 itself, met for the second time this year to discuss current issues in the sport and future rule changes. She also discussed plans for testing ahead of the 2025 season.

Formula 1’s only pre-season test over the last four seasons has taken place in Bahrain, allowing it to be coupled with the season-opening race at the same location. However, a new approach is needed for 2025 with Australia returning as opening round hosts.

A proposal will be presented to Formula 1 management for consideration.

Meanwhile, the introduction of rear-facing cameras in cars was agreed at the Spanish Grand Prix in June.
