The Incredible Comic That Could Tie Together X-Men ’97 and Deadpool & Wolverine

It’s been a big week for Marvel’s Mutants. X Men ’97 screwed that up Doors wide open with a haunting, epic episode that will have everyone talking, while Kevin Feige premiered a rousing episode of it at CinemaCon Deadpool and Wolverine footage. But rumors continue to circulate about who the big culprit behind it could be both Of those things, perhaps it’s time to turn to the source material – and one of the greatest series out there X Men in the long, long history of the book.

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s bold reimagining of the X-Men in New X-Men Mid-2001 adds a lot to the Marvel mutant legacy. Beyond its additions to the canon – examining the Destruction of Genosha; ending the first attempt at mutant statehood, which would then be reflected decades later in the rise of the Krakoan Age; the development of the concept of secondary mutation; his explorations of a world in which the world was exposed to the mutant identity of Charles Xavier on an international scale; the storylines in which Emma Frost becomes one of the most important additions to the X-Men of this generation; and even his controversial treatment of Magneto –New X-Men Set the tone for the stories Marvel would tell about mutants in the early 21st century.

His haunting, modernized embodiment of the mutant metaphor in a world on the verge of the terrorist attacks of September 11th – the opening story arc about the Genoshan genocide, “E is for Extinction”, began in July 2001 and ended in September – throughout In Over its three-year run, it has cleverly tied together the expansion of the presence of mutants on Earth amidst their superheroic shenanigans with the further development of research into unique aspects of mutant culture both in the world and with the codification of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning as an actual educational institution with hundreds of students living on campus. But it’s especially in these early storylines – particularly “E is for Extinction” and “Imperial” – that this is the case New X-Men presents us with one of the most remarkable, fascinating, and altogether terrifying mutant antagonists in the entire history of the X-Men: Cassandra Nova.

Cassandra Nova’s threat and impact, the “twin sister” of Charles New X-Men. X Men Comics have long dealt with ideological contradictions surrounding Xavier’s dream of mutant assimilation, but Cassandra’s twisted origins as a literal duplicate who survives only through the sheer strength of her psychic powers and her hatred of the brother who made her ours before he was born, Make her an incredibly formidable threat – a Professor X with no filter, no morals, no compromise, just great power and no hesitation to use it.

What defines her work outside of her personal connection to Xavier is immediately clear in her debut: Cassandra Nova is a villain Wins. Her manipulation of Bolivar Trask’s descendant to activate the Wild Sentinels, who would commit the Genoshan genocide, happens in just two episodes, and she is not stopped at the last minute, but instead slaughters 16 million mutants, a turning point New X-Men It continues to be a force to be reckoned with throughout its run, and its implications are only truly addressed in the more recent comics – a legacy that few villains can match.

Cassandra also wreaks psionic havoc beyond her role in Genosha, even though she barely appears in the book. Whether formless or in Charles’ own body – which she uses to expose his mutant identity on national television and even divide the Shi’ar Empire, as part of her incessant desire to kill everything that ever had anything to do with her brother’s life – Cassandra is not a villain of big speeches (Morrison weaves some of her best one-liners into her presence) or stagecraft; All of this is just simple theatrics if it can turn you into a gibbering wreck full of self-doubt or convince you to turn your own mind into mulch. The X-Men barely make it through their two big encounters with her, and she still ruthlessly destroys them in the process.

An unstoppable, vengeful force, there is no reason with her, no evil that she will not give in to. Even without her personal connection to Charles, Cassandra represents the kind of ultimate enemy who tests every aspect and legacy of the Xavier dream, both in pain and ideology, and questions the extent of Charles’ beliefs can, not only in a modern, frightened world, but when confronted with atrocities so devastating that they warrant an appropriate response. Even though the New X-Men overshadows the rest of the series, dealing with not just Charles, but all of the X-Men – and even beyond, given the ongoing legacy of Genosha.

We’re still not sure if these contemporary Marvel Studios projects will try to tackle them. After all, that’s how it is almost confirmedbut still not still confirmed that Emma Corrin will play Nova Deadpool and Wolverine (Even if the trailer makes it look like this They will) – and even then, given all the multiversal shenanigans at play in this film, there’s no telling what kind of version of Cassandra we might get. Similar, X Men ’97 is still grappling with the moment of the Genoshan genocide, so it’s unclear who exactly is behind his own version of the horrific act so far – and with Cassandra nowhere to be seen in the series yet, there’s plenty of opportunity for the series to delve to twist and change and do your own thing there.

But even then their effect, and New X-MenMarvel’s legacy is clearly felt as Marvel Studios returns to the world of mutants. Wherever these two very different X-Tales go, if all roads lead to Cassandra Nova, it will be very interesting to see how they deal with it.
