Shannen Doherty is all about tough love when it comes to her girlfriend and Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star, Tori spelling. Spelling, who recently filed for divorce Dean McDermott After months of separation, she had Doherty with her spelling mistake Podcast in which the longtime friends chatted about their complicated love lives and dealing with their new single status.
“It’s all so fresh that I’m not sure what I even want,” Spelling admitted of being back on the dating scene.
The actress and reality TV alum spoke about struggling with her fame and how it was seen as “emasculating” for men – but Doherty dismissed that notion.
“That’s what I want. I want a man who is proud to be with me and who doesn’t cheat, who doesn’t lie because he’s so afraid of losing me,” said the newly single Doherty. “But also a man who is really proud of my success and what I have achieved. And that’s what you’re really looking for now. Not a man you can dominate. No man to belittle you. Not a man who has red flags.
Spelling told Doherty she “didn’t agree” that this was possible, even if her future partner was successful in their own right.
“This is depressing,” Doherty told her. “Do you really think Keith Urban is worried about Nicole Kidman? … In my opinion it is possible.”
Spelling admitted that she believes there is a certain amount of self-sabotage on her part when it comes to pursuing new romantic relationships.
“I preemptively belittle myself, rush myself, and sabotage myself from building my career,” Spelling shared.
“Never make yourself small for anyone. I’ve been telling you that for 30 damn years,” Doherty replied.
“You really did. I wasn’t listening,” Spelling agreed.
Doherty doubled down, telling her friend: “You never really owned your power. And you were always insecure. And you were always a little afraid and always settled for much less than you deserved.” . And it’s time to change that, and you’re on the right path… You have the power within you, you just haven’t fully used it yet.
Doherty separated from Kurt Iswarienko last year after 11 years of marriage. The 53-year-old actress is currently battling stage four cancer and shared that cancer plays a big role in her dating life.
“You can’t set me up on a date without telling that person because someone has to decide if they want to spend time with someone who has a time bomb,” she admitted.
However, Doherty seems optimistic about her romantic future, saying: “I get what I need from the most important people in my life now, so I don’t need it from an outside source. I think then I will have my healthiest relationship.
As for spelling, she recently filed for divorce from McDermott after 18 years of marriage. The exes share five children – Liam (17), Stella (15), Hattie (12), Finn (11) and Beau (7). McDermott is also the father of Jack, 24, from a previous relationship.
“Tori filing for divorce from Dean was no surprise to either of them. They’ve both been doing everything right over the last few years and putting a plan into action,” a source recently told ET. “They wanted to make sure they were both cared for individually and also as co-parents. It’s not a volatile situation on either side and things are actually pretty cordial between them. Your situation as co-parents is fine and will continue to get better.”
