Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” is the Internet’s Song of the Summer

There are four little words that the girls just can’t get out of their heads: “That’s that me Espresso” – a little nonsensical, very catchy.

They seem to answer the hottest question of the season: What is the song of the summer? Sabrina Carpenter’s sun-drenched hit “Espresso” is currently the top contender. As artists scramble to promote their summer bops on TikTok and Stan Twitter fights it, Carpenter isn’t exactly ready to take the crown.

The Extremely Online – aka X/Twitter users – are constantly referencing, revising and recalling the song’s lyrics.

Carpenter is no stranger to internet attention. She is a former Disney Channel star who, in 2021, was the infamous “blonde girl” referenced in Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License.” But in 2022, Carpenter released her album Emails I can’t sendwho established herself as her very own pop princess.

One user wrote: “I love the duality that Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter offer as counterparts…Olivia’s songs are like ‘I’m so insecure and crazy and I’m going to die’ and Sabrina’s songs are like ‘Every boy is in love’ with me.” and that makes perfect sense.’”

Carpenter recently opened for Taylor Swift on the Latin American leg of the Eras Tour and performed at Coachella, which catapulted her to stardom. (The other pop star planning a similar appearance is Chappell Roan, who opened for Rodrigo on her GUTS World Tour and also performed at Coachella.)

Carpenter regularly goes viral with her suggestive outros to her biggest hit, “Nonsense,” which she adapts to the city in which she performs. Just last week at Coachella, she sang, “Makes his knees so weak he had to spread mine / He drinks my bath water like it’s red wine / Coachella, I’ll see you back here when I’m making headlines,” referencing hers relationship to Salt burn Star Barry Keoghan. (Keoghan brought “Espresso” even more attention when he posted a photo of a cup of coffee with the blonde queen emoji on his Instagram Story.)

But now fans and casual listeners alike can’t stop returning to “me espresso,” the strange phrase that spawned so many memes.

One user wrote: “Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my espresso.” Another clarified: “That’s that espresso for me. That’s what this espresso is for me. The? That’s what this espresso is for me. Oh that? That’s what this espresso is for me. That thing you have? Correct? That’s what this espresso is for me. Yes.” Someone else captioned a video of a waitress pouring a cup of coffee over her foot, “That’s my espresso.”

Other users are obsessed with how blond Both the song and Carpenter are. One user uploaded the meme “Can I actually have five more of these little blonde bitches?” with the caption “I’m listening to Espresso.” Another remarked: “Me Espresso… a most pleasing title for me. It’s not often that Blonde gets through in the recording anymore.” Someone else said: “Little Blonde Bitch’s espresso song is going crazy, sorry.”

The coffee community also sees the title as its anthem. Several users have thanked Carpenter. One said: “A 13-year-old girl came to my barista job and asked, ‘Can I get an espresso? Wait, what’s actually in an espresso?’ So thank you, Sabrina Carpenter.

Another wrote: “Sabrina Carpenter is my hero because she taught an entire generation of people that the word is ESpresso and not EXpresso.”
