Nissan is Introducing Four New Electrified Models for the Chinese Market

  • Nissan will launch five new electrified models in China by 2026, four concepts of which were unveiled at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show.
  • The Epoch sedan and Epic SUV have all-electric powertrains, while the Evo sedan and Era SUV are plug-in hybrids.
  • The production models are manufactured locally by Dongfeng and feature high-tech interiors and AI-powered virtual assistants.

Nissan stormed the 2024 Beijing Auto Show with four new concept cars, introducing an equal number of production vehicles for the Chinese market as part of its joint venture with Dongfeng. The Epoch sedan and Epic SUV have all-electric powertrains, while the Evo sedan and Era SUV are plug-in hybrids.

The automaker also confirmed that it will introduce five new Nissan-branded NEV (EV + PHEV) models in China by 2026, which is one more than previously announced. The range expansion is part of “The Arc” business plan presented a month ago.

Starting with the Nissan Epoch Concept, it is an all-electric sedan designed for “urban and suburban enthusiasts.” The model looks like a Tesla Model 3 competitor and features a sleek body with a minimalist finish and modern split LED headlights. The Epoch is packed with AI technology and features a virtual assistant that recognizes emotions.

The Nissan Epic Concept is an all-electric SUV for “adventurous urban couples who want to explore on the weekend.” The Qashqai-sized electric vehicle enables autonomous driving in the city and on the highway. It can also function as a mobile power source, making it suitable for camping. The interior features a triple screen layout, a perfume dispenser and comfortable seats with cushions for the rear passengers.

The group’s second sedan is the Nissan Evo Concept, but it has no connection to the rally-derived Mitsubishi from the same alliance. It has a plug-in hybrid drive and is intended for “weekend trips” with the family. The design is more aggressive and features a strongly sculpted nose, streamlined shoulders and cool looking taillights.

We can also see the minimalist interior with a Tesla-style freestanding infotainment display, a high-mounted center console and a beautiful finish around the cabin. In addition to the AI-powered virtual personal assistant, Nissan also mentioned the Evo concept’s ADAS and safety features.

Finally, the Nissan Era Concept is a plug-in hybrid SUV for “young business people who treat their car like a second home.” The profile, rear end and interior design appear largely identical to the Epic Concept from above, but the Era Concept features a redesigned face that makes it look more rugged. The PHEV powertrain is combined with Nissan’s e-4ORCE all-wheel drive system and active air suspension for a comfortable ride.

All four concepts will enter production by 2026, along with another NEV (New Energy Vehicle) model that has yet to be described. Nissan hasn’t revealed any details about the underpinnings of the concepts, which are likely to be closely related. Dongfeng will be responsible for production at its local factories, confirming Nissan’s new motto for the region: “In China, for China.”

As part of increasing its competitiveness in the Chinese market, Nissan will launch a new “Excitement by Ni” campaign. Additionally, the automaker will partner with “leading companies” to develop AI-based systems and services.

Under “The Arc” business plan, Nissan aims to sell 200,000 more vehicles annually in China by 2026, contributing to a global annual sales increase of 1 million units.
