“The reason I started using my voice in the first place was because I saw such disparities between women and women of color in my industry,” Guyton explained. “And then when I got pregnant, I thought: How could I not say something? I don’t want my son to look back when he grows up and know I didn’t say anything. He was a big motivation for that. “I realize that no matter what job you have, you can’t enjoy watching people struggle.”

She continued: “It will never be okay for me, and this is something I can sleep at night knowing that there are so many incredible artists of color emerging in this industry. That’s the most important. You know that line, Maya.” Angelou said, “People will forget what you said, but people will never forget how you felt.” And it’s so, so true, and it has so much made being an artist and devoting yourself to music more fulfilling.”
