Although she doesn’t mention Matty in “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” fans believe the lyrics subtly reference him, particularly when Taylor sings, “You crashed my party with your rental car / You said normal girls.” would be boring / But you.” were gone in the morning / You turned off the stage lights / But you’re still performing.”

At the start of the TTPD track, Taylor sings, “Was any of this true? / You stare at me with starry eyes / In your Jehovah’s Witness suit / Who the hell was that guy?” In the chorus, she refers to a summer spoiled by the person in question.

“And I don’t even want you back, I just want to know if the goal was to rust my glittering summer?” Taylor sings. “And I don’t miss what we had, but could someone give a message to the smallest man who ever lived?”
