Scuderia Ferrari, the undisputed kings of goods in the Formula 1 paddock, have collaborated with RayBan sunglasses and Mark Zuck’s Meta to deliver a limited edition branded pair “Meta Wayfarer Scuderia Ferrari Miami LTD“Nice sunglasses. The regular black smart glasses have been available for a few years and can be purchased for $299, albeit with the Ferrari logo and a new commemorative blue colorway the Scuderia’s blue livery for the Miami Grand Prix, Only 1,000 copies will be sold for $499 each. Ferrari tax, buddy.
Ever since these crazy glasses came out, I’ve had a hard time finding a single use case for them, but this partnership with Fezza has made me rethink that stance. The only meaningful use of these glasses would be to allow riders to use them to live stream the race from inside their own helmets. Streaming Formula 1 is pretty much the only way I can get back to using my Facebook account for anything other than sending my Instagram feed to my grandmother.
Seeing the entire race from the driver’s perspective would be pretty radical. F1 currently has a few “driver’s eye” cameras, but the series uses them infrequently and for short series. I want to watch Charles struggle to get past his soon-to-be unemployed teammate from inside the helmet using the built-in “ultra-wide 12-megapixel cameras” and hear the frustration in his voice Google Glasses Meta Wayfarer’s integrated microphone as the pit wall answers his questions with “Checking”. I mean, how awesome would it have been to be inside Carlos’ head last season when he first said, “Stop inventing!”?
Yes, Formula 1 is probably best viewed from the drivers’ perspective. This is a good idea and should be implemented immediately.
