The popular Kia Carens MPV was recently crash tested again by Global NCAP. Soon after the results were published, the company managed to attract a lot of attention. This is happening because the SUV received a poor 0-star rating in a previous review. However, in the current test it was able to secure an improved 3-star rating. What happened in the previous test?
In the latest crash test conducted by Global NCAP, the Kia Carens was criticized for its poor safety measures. This resulted in a 0-star rating for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP). Out of 17 points, it could only achieve 9.30 points. The assessment showed that the driver’s neck was inadequately protected.
It added that the vehicle provided little protection to the chest and knees. In addition, the integrity of the body was reported to be unstable. But even though the Carens offered six airbags as standard, it fell short of expectations.
Kia’s redemption
The zero-star rating acted as a catalyst for Kia to re-evaluate the Carens’ safety features. It also helped the brand improve its safety features and performance.
After recognizing the need for improvement, Kia responded quickly to correct the identified deficiencies. Immediate efforts focused on improving neck protection and modernizing the restraint systems in the MPV.
Current GNCAP tests are missing for Kia
Following the updates made by Kia, the Global NCAP conducted another round of crash tests. This time, Carens models manufactured after December 11, 2023 showed significant improvements in occupant protection.
This improvement was particularly concerned with the relief of neck injuries. The revised safety measures have brought the Carens from a zero-star rating to a commendable 3-star rating.
Analysis of the results
The latest crash test showed a notable improvement in the Caren’s safety performance. Even though Kia is still not at the top of the range, it has made a jump from zero to three stars.
This time the Kia Carens scored 22.07 out of a total of 34 points in protecting adult occupants. On the other hand, the Carens managed to score 40.92 out of 49 points.
Safety features of the Kia Carens
The Kia Carens is currently fully equipped in terms of safety features. It has six airbags, electronic stability control, rear parking sensors, hill start assist and three-point seat belts for all seats. The MPV is also equipped with ISOFIX anchorages for children.
2024 Kia Carens
Currently, the Kia Carens costs Rs 11.52 lakh. From then on, the price of the top-spec X-Line trim increases to Rs 19.67 lakh. As for engine options, the 2024 Kia Carens is available with three engine options and a range of transmission options.
The first is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine available with iMT and DCT transmission options. The second option is a 1.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine, available with manual, iMT and 6-speed automatic transmissions. Finally, there is a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine that is only available with a manual transmission.
