“I named it after the character I play in it. My character’s name is Hayes Ellison,” Costner, 69, told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, April 9. “And I said Hayes [after] this character. So I watched him grow up and thought, ‘Man, I better get going and do this movie!'”
Costner acted, directed and produced the two-parter Horizon: An American Sagawhich took over three decades to create.
“So I caught him and brought him with me, and he’s very good in that little part that he did,” Costner added. “If you see it, I think he has an influence on the film.”
Several celebrity children have inherited their famous parents’ acting genes. When asked if 15-year-old Hayes had to audition for the role, Costner admitted he didn’t.
“Don’t listen. I don’t give away great parts. I understand that there are young actors [there] That would be fatal to those parts,” Costner said. “And that’s why I have to respect the profession. But in certain cases I thought he could handle it. I wanted him close to me and so I did. So we’re bound together in a movie forever. I’m not actually in any scenes with him, but I directed him when he was little and now he’s big.”
Costner shares Hayes, son Cayden and daughter Grace with his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner. He is also father to daughters Annie and Lily and sons Joe and Liam from previous relationships.

As for whether he was nervous before releasing the project, Costner told Entertainment Tonight that he wasn’t. “I feel really good about this film [is]“What it does to me,” he added. “It was the kind of film I was hoping someone would make for me. That’s what I like to see.”
Costner previously praised his son when he shared a trailer for the project on Instagram in March 2024. “When it comes to your movie, you get to choose who you spend time with 👍🏻,” Costner wrote. “I’m really proud of my son Hayes for making his acting debut in #HorizonAmericanSaga. And thank you all for the love you showed our trailer this week. I couldn’t be more excited to share this with you.”
After Baumgartner filed for divorce from Costner in May 2023, a source exclusively shared Us weekly that he felt “betrayed” by her, but he “wanted to gain the upper hand” and was focused on his children and Horizon. “Kevin doesn’t want to waste any more time arguing with Christine,” the insider added in the August 2023 cover story.
Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 hits theaters on June 28th, followed by Chapter 2 on August 16th.
