Everything We Know About House of the Dragon Season 2

The finale of the first season of House of the Dragon ended with a devastating, dragon-fang-like crunch that shook the empire and set in motion the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. But with that epic cliffhanger came the terrible realization that we would have to wait for Season 2 to find out what would happen next.

This break may have been dark and full of terror, but thankfully it is almost over. House of the Dragon returns to us on June 16th, when we’ll finally see Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and her half-brother King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) seriously fighting for the Iron Throne.

To prepare for the new season, read on for a look at the trailers, a look at the new cast, and predictions about what will happen next based on George RR Martins Fire and blood. Here’s what we know about Season 2 so far.

What is the release date? House of the Dragon Season 2?

House of the Dragon Season 2 premieres June 16 and airs at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max. The season will consist of eight episodes instead of ten like the first season.

Does House of the Dragon Does season 2 have a trailer?

There are several! The first teaser, which you can watch here, gives us a brief insight into the bloody war for the Iron Throne. “Many will die,” Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) tells us. Knowing how things are turning out in Westeros, that might be the understatement of the century.

HBO stepped up its trailer game in March 2024 and released “Duel Trailers.” The first favors Team Black, those who support Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne after the late King Viserys (Paddy Considine) named her heir. They include Rhaenyra’s uncle and husband Daemon (Matt Smith) and House Velaryon, including Corlys (Steve Toussaint) and Rhaenys (Eve Best). Meanwhile, Rhaenyra’s eldest son Jacaerys (Harry Collett) hopes to increase that number by visiting the houses in the north – including the Starks!

The second duel trailer supports Team Green, led by Alicent, as they attempt to keep Aegon on the Iron Throne. In Season 1, Alicent misunderstood Viserys’ final words and believes he has changed his mind about Rhaenyra as his heir. Now she and her allies – including her father Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) and knight Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) – will do everything they can to maintain Viserys’ dying wish to install Aegon as king. The sadistic Aegon is only too ready to go to war, as is his drama king brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), who relishes the challenge of facing Daemon.

Who are the new actors and characters? House of the Dragon Season 2?

As House of the Dragon Season 2 explores more of Westeros and you can expect to see lots of new faces. Among them are Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor, The Dark Tower), the lord of Winterfell; Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox, The Ministry of Unfriendly Warfare), Alicent’s brother; and Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim, Raised by wolves), a sailor in the impressive Velaryon fleet.

Two additional new characters hint at pivotal events at Harrenhal Castle, the current seat of House Strong. Simon Russell Beale (The death of Stalin) will play Ser Simon Strong, castellan of Harrenhal. He’s also the great-uncle of Larys Strong (Matthew Needham), who you may remember as an all-around snake. Joining Beale in Harrenhal is Gayle Rankin (GLOW) as Alys Rivers, a healer who lives in Harrenhal and is powerful in more ways than one.

If you’re dying to know what happens after Rhaenyra puts on her war face at the end of season one, you’ve come to the right place. House of the Dragon has mostly stayed true to its source material so far, so I’m pretty confident it will continue to stick to the book even after Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) dies. Rhaenyra and Daemon will take massive revenge on Alicent and her family. Team Black will attempt to bolster their forces by finding riders for riderless dragons like Vermithor and Seasmoke. Meanwhile, Daemon will attack Harrenhal on Dragonback and conquer it without bloodshed, dealing a heavy blow to the Greens. In fire and blood, This attack occurs while Jacaerys (Harry Collett) and Lucerys are on their missions. Now that the tragedy of Luc’s death drives Daemon, it’s very likely that the series’ version of the attack at Harrenhal will be more violent.

And the violence will only continue! Because Daemon’s next step in the book is one of the most terrible events in Westerosi history. (If you have any doubts about spoilers, read now definitely Using his connections to the underbelly of King’s Landing, Daemon enlists the help of two unsavory characters known only as Blood and Cheese. They attack the Red Keep and force Queen Helaena (Phia Saban) to choose which of her sons to kill. They then murder the son, whom she does not name. The attack is due to Daemon Fire and bloodbut given the anger in Rhaenyra’s eyes at the end of the finale, is there any chance she’ll get involved too?

As chaos rages in the south, Jace travels north to the Eyrie and beyond to Winterfell. As he travels north, he will secure allies from houses such as the Arryns and the Manderlys. He will also befriend Lord Cregan Stark and win him over to Rhaenyra’s cause. So you can expect a mixed bag right from the start House of the Dragon Season 2. On the one hand, we get the Starks back. On the other hand, more traumatic child murders occur.

Get ready, fellow viewers: We may have a long wait, but the upcoming dance is going to be great fun.
