Emma Stone embraces her birth name. In a new interview, the actress reveals why she changed her name professionally, She said she recently “freaked out” over the swap.
In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter about her role on Showtime The curseIn response to a comment from co-star Nathan Fielder, Stone addressed her name preference.
“Her name is Emily, but professionally she goes by Emma,” he says THR. “So if there are people who don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But from now on I’ll just say Emily.”
Stone, whose birth name is Emily Jean Stone, replies: “You can say Emma. You can say anything.”
She further elaborates on her preferences and responds to the question of whether “anyone in the industry” calls her Emily.
“As I get to know them, so do the people I work with,” she shares. “That’s just because my name was taken [by another actress in the Screen Actors Guild]. Then I freaked out a few years ago. For some reason I thought, “I can’t do it anymore.” Just call me Emily.”
She notices that Fielder calls her “Em,” which makes things “easier.”
When asked how she would react if a fan addressed her on the street as Emily, Stone happily clarified: “That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”
During an appearance in 2018 The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Stone revealed that she occasionally called Emma instead of her first name in her honor Favorite Spice Girl, Emma Bunton.
“I was super blonde and my real name is Emily, but because of Baby Spice I wanted to be called Emma and you know what, now it’s me,” Stone joked. “So this is pretty messed up.”

Around this time, Swift released her “From the Vault” track “When Emma Falls in Love” in her re-recorded version of Speak Now. Fans quickly wondered if the tune was inspired by Stone and her ex. Andrew Garfieldbut the star remained coy when ET asked him about it.
