Move over Tyrannosaurus Rex, the future of wild electric vehicles is here – well, sort of. GAC unveiled the second-generation Aion V electric SUV at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, and let’s just say the designers took some creative liberties with a, shall we say, slightly spore-based Interpretation of the king of the Cretaceous period.

The designers claim the new Aion V’s exterior is inspired by the Tyrannosaurus Rex, which explains the rather confusing presence of a robotic dinosaur figure at the show. However, unlike its namesake, the EV has a friendly face and a rather generic profile.
Luckily, the Aion V features a more practical innovation: a brand new platform architecture. This shift signals GAC’s global ambitions and pushes the electric SUV beyond its usual turf in China.

The similarities with the previous generation are limited to the raised beltline in the profile and the grille-less nose. everything else has changed. The SUV is 4,605 mm (181.3 inches) long and has a wheelbase of 2,775 mm (109.3 inches), making it slightly larger than a Ford Escape.
The second generation Aion V is based on the new modular AEP architecture developed by GAC itself. Thanks to the clever packaging and the liquid-cooled electric drive, the underbody is said to offer 20 percent more interior space compared to other vehicles of similar size.

The compact SUV is equipped with a single electric motor that produces 181 hp (135 kW / 184 hp). The energy is stored in a CATL battery and provides a CLTC range of 750 km (466 miles). It is also designed to withstand extreme temperatures from -30°C to 55°C (-22°F to 131°F). Despite using a 400V architecture, the battery can add up to 370 km (230 miles) of range in just 15 minutes of charging.
GAC Aion has not yet revealed the interior of the new model, which promises to be full of technology and adapts to the needs of each user thanks to AI. The front and rear seats can be folded flat and transformed into a double bed, which makes the SUV suitable for camping, especially in combination with the built-in refrigerator. Additionally, the model is equipped with the ADiGO Pilot ADAS suite, which utilizes 11 cameras, 5 radars and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.
Sales of the new GAC Aion V will begin in China in July 2024, after which expansion to other markets is planned. GAC Aion has already launched in Southeast Asian countries and intends to further expand its presence in the future. To become a global brand, GAC will open new factories in Thailand and Indonesia.
Chinese media have reported that the company is developing a variant of the GAC Aion V as part of the GAC-Toyota joint venture, which could potentially be sold with the Toyota brand in China. However, this still needs to be confirmed.
