Chris Hemsworth Was “pissed” Over the Reaction to His Alzheimer’s Condition

Chris Hemsworth comments on the public’s reaction to the news that he has a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s.

“It really pissed me off because it felt like I had become vulnerable about something personal and shared that,” he shared in an interview Vanity Fair Cover story published Tuesday, April 30. “No matter how many times I said, ‘This is not a death sentence,’ the story became the story that I have dementia and am rethinking my life, retiring, and so on.”

He added: “I read a really funny comment at the end of an article: ‘I hope Chris forgets he’s retiring and comes back.'”

Hemsworth, 40, discovered his genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s while filming the Disney+ docuseries Limitless, which premiered in 2022. On the show, the actor was told that he has two copies of the APOE4 gene, which is linked to the disease. At this point, Hemsworth had planned to take a break from his acting career – which contributed to further headlines.

This discovery means Hemsworth is eight to ten times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease – a disease his grandfather currently suffers from.

Coincidentally, Hemsworth further discussed his Alzheimer’s predisposition in a separate interview with Vanity Fair from November 2022.

“It was very intense to navigate it,” he said of the ruling news. “Most of us like to avoid talking about death in the hope that we can somehow avoid it. We all believe we will make it. Then suddenly you realize that some key indicators suggest that this is the path that is going to happen, and the reality sinks in: your own mortality.”

He explained: “It’s like one in a thousand people [who have two copies of the gene] …or one in 10,000. I can not remember.”

“For me, the positive thing about it was: ‘Right, if I didn’t know that [Alzheimer’s] “Based on my information, I would not have made the changes I made,” he continued. “I just wasn’t aware of it, so I’m now grateful that I have the tools in my arsenal to best prepare and prevent something like this from happening.”

Regarding the changes in his life, Hemsworth said that he focused on “incorporating more solitude into my life” while speaking to him Men’s health in October 2023.

“I’ve always been pretty consistent with my training commitments, but lately I’ve really felt the importance of taking time for myself, without any outside voice or stimulation, and making time for silence,” he added added, noting that “meditation and breathing exercises are important” have also become the norm in his life.
