How often should you wash a wig?

“There are a few variables that determine how often you need to wash your wig,” says Kimble. “If you work out and sleep in it and also use a lot of product, you’ll need to wash it more often. If you don’t use a lot of product on your wig, you should generally wash it every two to three weeks.”

What is the best makeup base?

According to Wiles, the best foundation is one that is “non-greasy, mattifying and smoothing the skin.” One of her favorites is Pat McGrath’s Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection primer. “Plus a primer that minimizes fine lines and keeps makeup in place for hours,” she added.

What is the maximum amount of heat I should use on my hair?

“For thin, fine, and more fragile colored or lightened hair, I recommend staying at around 250 to 300 degrees,” says a celebrity hairstylist Britteny Ryan told us. “If you have thicker, coarser, wavier hair, I would keep the heat between 350 and 400. The maximum I would reach is 450 degrees.”

Is heat protection even necessary?

“I ALWAYS recommend using a heat protectant before styling your hair,” says Ryan, who works with celebrities, among others Elle King, Jessica Alba, Paris Hilton and more, said. “Heat protectants lock in moisture, prevent frizz from forming and protect against UV and thermal damage.” The hairdresser added: “Remember that you are using a tool that is at the same temperature on your hair that you use pizza would bake in an oven. Protect your strands with a heat protectant and don’t keep your hair tools on the hair for too long.”

How do I maintain healthy hair under a wig?

Kimble — the creator of HairUWear’s Kim Kimble Hair Collection — recommends wig wearers give themselves a hot oil treatment before braiding their strands. “I would recommend doing this or doing a deep conditioning treatment,” she noted.
