Lionel Messi Breaks MLS Record with Inter Miami’s Stunning Win Over the Red Bulls

It was another timeless performance from the legendary Lionel Messi in Inter Miami’s recent win over the New York Red Bulls.

The former Barcelona player set a new Major League Soccer record with a whopping five assists in the Herons’ 6-2 win over the Red Bulls at Chase Stadium. Even though Miami conceded the first goal of the game for the fourth time in a row, Messi and Co. were clearly unfazed as they scored six goals in front of their fans in the second half – with Messi having a hand in all six of his team’s goals .

Messi provided the assists for new signing Matias Rojas’ first two goals as a Miami player, while he joined his former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez in assisting his best friend’s first hat-trick as a Heron.

While Messi continued to dish out assists left and right, he also set a new MLS record as his five assists are now the most ever in a single league game. Messi now leads the league in goals and assists with 10 and 12 respectively, and he doesn’t look like he’s slowing down any time soon – even with the Copa America on the horizon.

If Messi wasn’t the MVP front-runner before tonight, after 12 games played, there’s simply no way he isn’t. The 36-year-old essentially played with the Red Bull defense for most of the game and probably could have picked up another assist or two if Miami hadn’t gotten off to such a slow start.

Suarez already scored two braces for Miami against Orlando City and DC United earlier in the season, but he finally scored a hat trick in a revenge game against New York. In fact, Suárez was in the starting lineup for Miami’s heavy 4-0 loss on March 23 when Messi was unavailable due to a hamstring injury.

The Uruguayan has proven that he still has plenty left to compete against one of the better defenses in MLS. For comparison: New York had only conceded more than two goals once before the game – a 3-0 defeat against current MLS Cup winners Columbus Crew.

Suárez not only showed first-class composure and finishing in front of goal, but his movement and attacking play weren’t too bad either.

Messi and Suarez are now tied at the top of the MLS Golden Boot standings with ten goals each, and it won’t be hard for anyone to stop them if they don’t suffer any more injuries and score more goals.

The iconic duo of Suarez and Messi have undoubtedly put in their best performances to date as Heron and will be looking to continue on that path ahead of the upcoming Copa America tournament in the USA.
