Buick Introduces Two Electra Concepts With Glove Box Displays and Striking Good Looks | Car Scoops

The all-electric concepts are expected to develop into series offerings for the Chinese market

Buick introduces two Electra concepts with glove box displays and striking good looks

  • The Buick Electra L is an all-electric sedan that could compete with the BMW i5, Mercedes EQE and Tesla Model S, along with the Buick Electra LT crossover wagon.
  • The four-seater cabin is full of luxury and high-tech features, including a tea table and a passenger display that retracts into the glove compartment.
  • Both models are based on the GM Ultium architecture and can deliver a CTLC range of over 700 km (435 miles).

Buick showed two interesting concepts at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show: the Electra L and the Electra LT, a midsize sedan, and its lifted station wagon brother based on the GM Ultium architecture, respectively.

The Electra L measures 5,036 mm (198.3 inches) and has a wheelbase of 3,000 mm (118.1 inches). This makes it similar in size to the BMW i5, Mercedes EQE and Tesla Model S. The exterior design is inspired by the 2022 Buick Wildcat concept, although it looks sleeker and closer to production.

Highlights include the “Spread Wings” LED graphic on the sculpted front bumper and the turbine-style alloy wheels. The hatchback rear looks neat with the integrated spoiler over the full-width lighting units. The Electra L also features cameras that replace mirrors and invisible door handles that improve its aerodynamic appearance.

The sedan is joined by the Electra LT concept, a higher station wagon version with a more adventurous character. The Electra LT features discreet fender extensions, “Titanium Metal Armor” wheels and an aerodynamic roof box that can carry skis, surfboards, bikes and other types of gear. It also features adaptive air suspension that can increase ground clearance by up to 40 mm (1.6 inches) if necessary.

The cabin features four individual “Zero-Gravity” seats with “Surflex” cushions covered in purple and white eco-friendly suede-like upholstery. The floating and slightly curved digital cockpit on the dashboard is joined by a panoramic head-up display and a passenger screen that disappears into the glove compartment when not in use.

Another cool feature is the tea table on the rear center console, where occupants can enjoy a cup of tea on the go. The light-sensitive panoramic sunroof, the air freshener and the AI-supported infotainment also contribute to a pleasant atmosphere.

The Buick Electra L and LT concepts are based on the GM Ultium architecture. They are equipped with a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 342 hp (255 kW / 347 hp). According to Buick, a battery of unknown capacity provides a range of over 700 km (435 miles) as measured according to CLTC protocols.

Unfortunately, we don’t know when the production versions of the Buick Electra L and LT concepts will join the automaker’s Chinese lineup. In any case, the electric vehicles are manufactured by the SAIC-GM joint venture in China.
