10-man Leeds lose 3-0 to Chelsea, remaining in EPL bottom three

Obstructed by another red card in the first half, Leeds lost 3-0 at home to Chelsea on Wednesday to remain rooted in the Premier League relegation zone in the final week of the season.

Already behind Mason Mount’s goal in the fourth minute, Leeds were reduced to 10 men in the 24th minute when winger Dan James received a straight red card for a wild jump on Mateo Kovacic.

The reckless challenge had echoes of the one produced by teammate Luke Ayling against Arsenal on Sunday, who also saw the defender start.

Leeds’ American coach Jesse Marsch could not hide his frustration on the side and Chelsea made his team pay, with Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku adding goals in the second half on Elland Road.

Leeds are in third-to-last place, behind Burnley on goal difference after playing one more game. Leeds have two games left – against Brighton and Brentford – in their bid to return to the Championship.

Another concern for Marsch was the sight of his two wingers, Jack Harrison and Raphinha, leaving with injuries.

Meanwhile, Kovacic tried, but was unable to continue playing after being injured by James’ foul and came to the red card six minutes later. The midfielder seems to be in doubt for the FA Cup final against Liverpool on Saturday.

Chelsea consolidated third place, moving four points from Arsenal in fourth place, who play Tottenham – the fifth team – on Thursday. Tottenham are eight points behind Chelsea, who are close to a Champions League qualifier.
