CHENGDU, China, April 25, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Between April 27 and May 5, badminton enthusiasts around the world will turn their eyes to the Chinese city of Chengdu, home to one of the world’s most prestigious badminton team competitions – the TotalEnergies BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Final 2024. This event is scheduled to take place at the Chengdu High-tech Zone Sports Center Gymnasium.

According to the competition’s organizing committee, this is the first time that western China will host the world’s top badminton event. During the Thomas & Uber Cup, 32 teams from 20 nations and regions will come to Chengdu to compete for the coveted trophy.

In the host city of Chengdu, badminton is an extremely popular sport with a large fan base and one of the highest participation rates among citizens. Data released by the Chengdu Badminton Association shows that more than 500,000 people in Chengdu play badminton regularly and the city is home to over 440 venues with four or more badminton courts. When it comes to spending on sports education and training, spending on badminton comes first.
The passion for badminton is just one aspect of the city-wide passion for sports. In recent years, Chengdu has made tremendous efforts to position itself as a world-famous sports city, hosting a number of high-profile international sports events such as the 31st Summer World University Games and the ITTF World Team Championships. These efforts have promoted the comprehensive improvement of sports infrastructure facilities across the city and spurred the popularity of physical exercise among citizens, as more and more people in Chengdu participate in sports such as badminton and enjoy the health and joy that physical exercises bring.
Hosting the Thomas & Uber Cup in the provincial capital of Sichuan will further deepen the relationship between Chengdu and the world of sports. In the near future, the city will also host more than 50 top-level international and domestic sporting events, including the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup, the World Dance Sport Festival (WDSF) China and the Chengdu Marathon, which will further strengthen competition The city’s sporting genes.
