Former Sri Lanka captain and Rajasthan Royals (RR) director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara has named India as a strong contender for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, to be played in the US and West Indies from June 1.
Sangakkara also praised India’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, describing it as exceptionally strong and balanced. The Sri Lankan legend highlighted Team India’s strength in terms of impressive batting and versatile all-rounders, as well as its quality spin options that offer it tactical adaptability depending on the circumstances of the mega event.
Sangakkara expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt to various conditions and praised the strategic planning of India head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma.
The legendary batsman also highlighted the flexibility of the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup, allowing them to play with different combinations depending on their desired batting or bowling strength.

Kumar Sangakkara said at the press conference: “It is an extremely strong team. They have their power under control, they have their all-rounders in action. They have very high quality spin and they have very good combinations that they can play. Knowing the conditions there, I am sure Rahul and Rohit have a good idea of what the team should look like to play the cricket they want in the World Cup.
And they will have two or three different combinations depending on whether they want a deeper batting line-up or more bowling power. But it’s a really balanced squad, a very strong squad and India have always been very strong in international tournaments.”
India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 consists of four Rajasthan Royals (RR) players: Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Yuzvendra Chahal in the main squad, with Avesh Khan named as a reserve player for the mega event. Sangakkara said that they are really proud of their players selected for the Indian squad and praised their hard work and resilience.
Sangakkara praised the players for maintaining focus despite the speculation about the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, which translated into strong performances in the ongoing IPL 2024 and ultimately secured them places in the national squad.

As far as Rajasthan Royals (RR)’s performance is concerned in the ongoing IPL 2024, the Sanju Samson-led franchise is in top form this season. The Royals have lost just one game out of their nine matches in the ongoing IPL 2024 so far and are 16 points clear at the top spot.
The RR have all but secured their place in the IPL 2024 playoffs and will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 50th match of the season on Thursday, May 2 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.
