The Annecy International Animation Film Festival has announced the program for its 2024 edition, taking place from June 9th to 15th. (Scroll down for the full list of titles and events.)
Highlights announced Thursday include guest of honor Terry Gilliam, who will receive an honorary award and give a master class. He joins previously announced guest of honor Wes Anderson.
23 new animated features will be introduced in the main areas “Competition” and “Contrechamps”.
Features in the main competition include the first animated film from Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius The most valuable of all cargoeswhich will also open the festival.
The drama follows the fate of a little boy who is thrown off a train to Auschwitz by his French-Jewish father. The film will premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Other Cannes films in the Annecy main competition include the selection “Un Sure Regard.” Flow by Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis and Ghost cat Anzu by the Japanese Yoko Kuno, who will play in Directors’ Fortnight.
In a sign of the strength of Japan’s creative animation sector, three other titles from the region are also in the running for the Cristal for the festival’s best film: Shinnosuke Yakuwa’s Totto-Chan: The little girl at the window, Yoshiyuki Momoses The imaginary and Naoko Yamadas The colors inside.
Other competition highlights include Adam Elliots memoirs of a snail, with Sarah Snook as the voice of the young outsider.
The award-winning Swiss animation director Claude Barras is also in the competition Savageshis first animated feature since his Golden Globe, Bafta and Oscar-nominated 2016 film My life as a zucchini.
The stop-motion animated film is set in Borneo, on the edge of the tropical forest, and follows the emotional journey of a girl, her father and a rescued baby orangutan.
The popular lakeside animation festival welcomed 15,820 badge holders from 102 areas in 2023, up 19% from 2022.
Offering demonstrations, work-in-progress and making-of presentations, studio previews and first looks, as well as the market and recruiting fair, it is a must-attend event for established professionals, aspiring animators and students.
As usual in Annecy, there will be numerous preview events for upcoming studio animations.
This includes sneak previews of Transformers One And Despicable Me 4 as well as first insights The wild robotT, Inside Out 2 and Moana 2.
As the streamer previously announced, Netflix will also announce a number of upcoming animated originals, including the new untitled title Wallace & Gromit Movie and Zack Snyder’s series Twilight of the Gods.
