A lawyer for Ron GoldmanThe family then speaks out OJ Simpsonwho was accused of Goldman’s murder in 1994, died at age 76.
Simpson “died without repentance,” the attorney said, according to a statement on Thursday, April 11 AP.
Simpson’s family confirmed his death Thursday after a battle with cancer.
“On April 10, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. “He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren,” a statement shared via X said. “During this time of transition, his family asks that you respect their desire for privacy and grace.”
Although Simpson originally rose to fame as an NFL star, his time in the public eye also caused controversy. He was linked to the murder of his ex-wife in 1994 Nicole Brown Simpson and Goldman, who was a friend of Brown Simpson.
Brown Simpson, who was 35 at the time of their deaths, and Goldman, who was only 25, were fatally stabbed in California, and Simpson was subsequently arrested.
Following the Trial of the Century – which has since been documented in FX American Crime Story: The People v. OJ Simpson — Simpson was acquitted of murder charges in 1995. He was later found guilty of wrongful death and assault charges in a civil lawsuit against Goldman.
More than 20 years after Goldman’s death, his family reflected on the civil case against Simpson and how the criminal case still haunts them.
“Even though we won, we were very empty. But I think it paved the way up for other victims and survivors. And I think it’s given people a lot of space to start rebuilding and healing when you take the wheel,” says Ron’s father. Fred Goldmansaid during a performance in February 2017 Good morning America. “It is still difficult for me to this day that he was not found guilty in the criminal trial. Everything was there. Everything was there. But there was too much other rubbish involved.”
Ron’s sister, Kim Goldmanadded that there was still “no escape,” referring to the increasing media coverage of the murders of her brother and Brown Simpson.
“There were a lot of shows and a lot of programs and films. … I don’t want to continue debating the evidence,” she continued GMA. “I don’t want to keep rehashing the witness statements. I don’t want to constantly justify and defend.”
The family also reflected on how sad it is that Ron’s life was cut short and all of his “dreams” couldn’t be “realized.”
Kim noted that while the sadness “continues,” she can at least see her deceased sibling again through her own children. “I have a 13-year-old son who has similar behaviors,” she explained. “Sometimes he does something that makes me think, ‘God, my brother, always did that.’ Or he has a pattern of freckles that reminds me of my brother.”
While Ron’s death will forever be remembered by his loved ones, Simpson eventually ended up behind bars for another crime.
Simpson was arrested in 2007 and found guilty of kidnapping and armed robbery the following year. He was sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison.
The disgraced athlete was released on probation in December 2021 after serving the minimum sentence.
Earlier this year, Simpson made headlines when it was revealed that he was being treated for prostate cancer. Simpson denied in February that he was in hospice care, telling his social media followers at the time that he had “invited a bunch of friends to the Super Bowl” that month.
Simpson’s final X post was posted on Super Bowl Sunday and shows him wearing a San Francisco 49ers jersey to support the team playing the Kansas City Chiefs, who ultimately won.
Simpson is survived by the children Arnelle, Jason and Aaren, whom he shared with his first wife Margaret Whitleyand Sydney and Justin, whom he welcomed with his late ex-wife Brown Simpson.
