New Study Shows 16% of Electric Vehicle Owners Are Out of Juice

  • A new study has found that a surprising number of electric vehicle owners are running out of batteries.
  • 10% of electric vehicle owners reported waiting more than an hour for a charging station.
  • Despite these and other issues, 91% of EV owners said their next car will be electric.

Range anxiety is often viewed as a thing of the past, as many electric vehicles can now travel hundreds of miles on a single charge. However, a new study has found that 16% of electric vehicle owners are completely out of juice.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“4d84e4c9-9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a”); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd(” 6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657″); } });

That’s a surprising statistic and was revealed in a new study commissioned by Ideal Power that focused on how widespread the concerns were among electric vehicle owners. In addition to finding that several drivers had run out of power, the researchers also found that 44% of owners said “range anxiety had a negative impact on their overall satisfaction with owning an electric vehicle.”

One of the biggest worries for electric vehicle owners is arriving at a charging station and finding that all the spots are full. 75% of owners said this had happened to them at least once, and 10% of respondents said they had waited an hour or more for a charging spot. Luckily, this is rare as the average wait time is usually 15 minutes or less.

Speaking of charging: 70% of electric vehicle owners charge most of their vehicles at home. 16% primarily use public charging stations, while the remaining 14% use both a little.

Given concerns about range and charging, it’s no surprise that 42% of electric vehicle owners would pay extra to reserve a charging spot. Interestingly, we’re not talking about a dollar or two here, as the average amount people were willing to pay was $15. That’s quite a lot since the US Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that the average price of electricity is $0.174 per kWh.

Despite charging issues, 56% of owners said range anxiety was more stressful than charging anxiety. Of course the two are closely related.

While owners reported a handful of negative experiences and drawbacks, the vast majority of study participants loved electric vehicles. Specifically, an impressive 91% said their next vehicle will be electric.
