The Masked Singer often feels like a hallucination, but for Miss Cleocatra it was almost one.
“I was still taking a little morphine” Jenifer Lewis joked Us weekly before her unmasking in the Wednesday, April 24 episode. “And if you look closely, you’ll see the cat head says, ‘What? What happened?’ I was stoned under the hat.”
Lewis, 67, says all of this with a lot of laughter, but when she filmed her appearance on Season 11 of the Fox competition series, she was recovering from a major health scare after falling from a 10-foot hotel balcony while on vacation in 2022 Tanzania fell. In March, she revealed she couldn’t remember how to walk after the accident.
That was still the case when… Black alum filmed her performance The Masked Singerand her Miss Cleocatra costume was designed with this in mind.
“When I did the show, I was still on a walker,” Lewis explained. “I suggested that they make me Cleopatra so I could be carried on a barge so I could take the throne and the men could escort me – you know, the muscular men, Cleopatra. So they called back and showed me the cat head and said, “We’re making you Cleo.”from.’ And girl, I laughed so hard. I found it hysterical. And it worked! What worked for me was that I was able to hide the fact that I couldn’t walk. … I had a nice time.”

The Masked Singer was actually one of the first projects she did after her recovery, in part because her friends thought it would be a fun way for her to get back into the game.
“My friends made me get out of bed,” she recalled, adding that she liked the idea of doing something completely stress-free. “This is my career now. No stress, especially after the fall in Africa. Just come along, have fun and say a few words of wisdom if you can. End of the story.”
For the same reason, Lewis, a seasoned stage and screen veteran, has signed on to another unusual project this year: Jennifer Lopez‘S This is me… now: A love story. Lewis played the twin member of the Zodiac Council who advised Lopez’s character, the artist, on matters of life and love.
“She called and really wanted me to delve into the aspect of mental illness that she wanted to convey to her audience,” Lewis explained. “And she had seen an interview where I talked about coming out of dark spaces and depression. Because, you know, I have bipolar disorder, but I was treated for many years and really respected that. So I showed up for them and it was a lot of fun. I mean, just that costume, I was like, ‘What am I wearing?’ What’s this about?’”
The Masked SingerHowever, due to its sheer ridiculousness, it still stands out as a bright spot on Lewis’ resume.
“My guess is it will be in the top five [weirdest things I’ve done]said Lewis Us. “I’ve had a few mishaps with costumes – once a tit fell out in front of an audience. A few things happened to me. Oh girl, I could tell you stories. But yes, Masked singerThere are a lot of them.”
