Chinese small electric car manufacturer Zhidou recently launched its Rainbow Mini EV in China. To the untrained eye, it might look like the cousin of the MG Comet EV that we have in India. This brand new small electric hatchback is priced at $4,400 to $6,000 (approximately Rs. 3.6 to 5 lakh).
Zhidou Rainbow Mini EV
This brand new mini electric hatchback measures 3224mm long, 1515mm wide and 1630mm high. Its wheelbase is now 2100 mm. And just like the MG Comet, despite being tiny on the outside, it still offers a three-door, four-seat layout.
When it comes to the design of the Rainbow Mini EV, there is no doubt that this electric hatchback looks cute. It gets a more rounded design than the Comet, which looks a bit sharper. Notable design elements of the Mini EV include big dipper headlights, carbon fiber exterior mirrors and Y-shaped LED lights.
There are also 13-inch or 15-inch Roman shield hubcaps available. Also, like the Comet, it has large side windows that make the interior feel more airy. At the rear, however, there are the same Y-shaped LED taillights as at the front.
The Zhidou Rainbow Mini EV is available in seven exterior colors in China. These colors include pink, purple, brown, yellow, cyan, green and brown.

The interior of this unique looking hatchback continues its minimalist design language. It gets a cute design with a pink background and a double-spoke steering wheel.
It also comes with a 5-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 9-inch infotainment screen. This Mini EV also features a set of physical buttons that have been retained below the touchscreen.
Other features include remote vehicle control via mobile phone, remote vehicle unlocking, remote car search, scheduled charging, OTA updates and over 20 storage slots. The standard trunk length is 390 mm. In addition, the storage volume can be expanded to 1034 liters by folding down the rear seats.
Zhidou Rainbow Mini EV powertrain and battery
The Zhidou Rainbow Mini EV’s powertrain is powered by either a 20 kW/85 Nm or a 30 kW/125 Nm electric motor. It comes with a Guoxuan Hi-Tech lithium iron phosphate battery.
The battery capacities available for the Rainbow Mini EV are 9.98 kWh, 17.18 kWh and 17.3 kWh. These battery packs offer CLTC ranges of 125km, 205km and 201km respectively.
Zhidou – The manufacturer of mini electric cars
For those who may not know, Zhidou became a pioneer among Chinese brands that ventured into new energy mini cars. Its debut model came onto the market in May 2014. It was later renamed Zhidou D1.
The company then introduced the Zhidou D2 and Zhidou D3, both of which feature a distinctive three-door, two-seater configuration. However, despite its promising start, Zhidou faced challenges that led to a gradual decline in its presence in the market.
Now the company is celebrating a comeback after a comprehensive overhaul of its capital strategy. The company is currently under the leadership of Geely’s CEO Gan Jiayue.
