Maserati, BMW, Mercedes, Audi Worth Rs 10 Crore Seized in GST Fraud

The Crime Response Team of Noida Police along with the help of officers from Noida Sector 20 Police Station recently arrested three persons in connection with a GST fraud case. All three defendants are multimillionaires who have been defrauding the system for five years. In addition to the private individuals, the authorities also confiscated several luxury cars worth a total of around Rs 10 billion.

According to DCP (Crime) Shakti Avasthi, the recently arrested persons fraudulently claimed input tax credits by setting up as many as 30 shell companies. According to the reports, these people have caused a loss of nearly Rs 68.15 million to the system. Part of this amount has already been withdrawn from these people’s bank accounts.

Those arrested are Sanjay Dhingra (54), his wife Kanika Dhingra (55) and his son Mayank Dhingra (27). All of them are residents of East Punjabi Bagh, Delhi. The accused have been evading police for the last seven to eight months. Police even sought help from the public and announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for her arrest.

Mr Avasthi said: “To avoid arrest, the suspects traveled frequently and constantly changed hotels and locations. Vehicles recovered from their possession include the Italian luxury car Maserati, a Mercedes and a BMW. They also recently started a real estate business. All three have bought land worth crores of rupees in Karnal, Haryana and also own a farmhouse in Chhatarpur, Delhi.”

Accused arrested for GST fraud

Avasthi added, “The suspects claimed to be in the milk business. They were caught for GST fraud before, but then they changed the name of their company and started from scratch.”

The defendants drove expensive cars such as Maserati Levante, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW X7 and many other cars. When questioned, the defendants said that they knowingly bought expensive cars to ensure that the police did not stop them on the road for regular checks. Usually, the police officers on duty try not to stop expensive cars, since the owners of these cars often have all the documents up to date and these cars are also used by influential people in society. Police officers try to avoid trouble by not stopping such expensive cars.

However, in this case, the accused were caught and the cars were also confiscated. The investigation team seized six luxury cars and also recovered seven mobile phones, a tablet and Rs 1.41 lakh in cash.

A case was registered against the accused in the case in June last year. Since then, police officers have arrested more than 40 people in connection with the case. Last year in June, cops had nabbed a gang suspected of masterminding this multi-crore scam.

This is not the first time we have come across a case of financial fraud. One of the most famous names is Sukesh Chandrasekhar. He created fake identities and used them to extort money from wealthy businessmen. He had several expensive cars like Rolls Royce and Lamborghini, all of which were confiscated by the law enforcement agency and later auctioned to recover the amount.
