The famous celebrity stylist spoke to ET’s Rachel Smith in New York City, nearly 24 hours after styling Zendaya — not once, not twice. but three times — for the 2024 Met Galaand he went back in time a little and remembered how they had strengthened the relationship that everyone sees between them today.
“When I met her when she was 13, we made a pinky promise together that we would do everything we could to support her and help her grow, and as she grew up she would take me with her and do just that she did.” Roach told ET. “She kept her promise and I kept my promise to her and we grew up together.”
Roach, 45, and Zendaya, 27, have come so close to usthey can affectionately refer to each other in family terms.
“She’s my annoying little sister sometimes, and I think I’m her annoying big brother sometimes,” he joked. “And you know, it just feels good. Like you said, loyalty in this industry isn’t… you don’t see that that often. But at this point it’s really just family.”
Zendaya is no stranger to turning heads. Just ask Tom Holland. But she took things seriously to the last degree as she first slipped out of her statement peacock-inspired Maison Margiela dress and into a special Rita Watnick dress. She also shined in a third appearance – when she took the stage as co-chair of the Met Gala wearing a custom-made Celia Kritharioti gown. The figure-hugging dress featured a plunging neckline and intricate beading with tiny flowers.

“I have to give a lot of credit to Anna Wintour and the team Fashion, “And also the staff and team at the Met,” Roach said. “They were very generous and kind to listen to our story.” I pitched the story as, “We just want to tell the story of fashion and celebrate John Galliano’s work over the years,” and I think the story was convincing, so they gave us a little space and we went in and took off the first look and changed the makeup a little… so it was her and her makeup artist Raul, and they gave us some time and came back out and then we closed the carpet.
