King Charles III Returns to Public Royal Duties as He Battles Cancer

King Charles III returns to official royal duties amid his ongoing health battle. Buckingham Palace announced Friday that the 75-year-old British monarch plans to “return to public duties following a period of treatment and recovery following his recent cancer diagnosis.”

Charles and his wife, Queen CamillaTo mark the occasion, they will appear together for the first time at a cancer treatment center next Tuesday.

The palace adds that Charles is planning “a series” of public events over the next few weeks.

The royal couple also plans to host the Emperor and Empress of Japan on a state visit in June.

“As the first anniversary of the Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world during the joys and challenges of the past year,” the palace said in a statement.

Even though Charles hasn’t made any public appearances in months, he’s not completely out of sight. He received several audiences at Buckingham Palace and has been photographed at these events in recent weeks.

The palace first announced in February that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer after the royal underwent surgery related to an enlarged prostate.

“During the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, another issue was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the palace said in a statement at the time. “His Majesty began a regular treatment schedule today. During this time, he was advised by doctors to postpone public duties. During this period, His Majesty will continue to conduct state business and official formalities as usual.”

A month after Charles’ message, his daughter-in-law contacted Kate Middleton, posted a video message in which she shared that she had also been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment. The mother of three has not had any public events since December.

Her husband, Prince Williamhas returned to public engagements after a short absence.

Kate spoke to Charles before news of her own diagnosis went public.

“The King had lunch with Catherine…at Windsor after she had recorded [her video] News,” Royal expert Katie Nicholl previously told ET. “This is something very special, I don’t think you will have many one-on-one audiences with the king. I think that’s an indication of how close they are, and certainly this shared experience, this shocking double cancer diagnosis, will only bring them closer.”
