The Kedah state government plans to build a light rail transit (LRT) train system with magnetic levitation technology in Langkawi. To realize this wish, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was held yesterday between Permodalan Kedah Berhad (PKB) and Royal Eco Train Development (RETD) of South Korea.
The signing ceremony was represented by RETD Co Ltd CEO Lee Changwook with Mohd Azad Jasmi as PKB CEO and attended by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor. In addition to RETD, this project also received collaboration with the company Q-Plex to study the technical, geographical and impact of the project on the local economy.
The Chairman of the Committee on Industry and Investment, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, YB Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah, said the MoU is an initiative of the PKB to build a network with international companies for the development of Kedah State. It is also in line with the development of Langkawi as a whole and supports the KEDAH2035 agenda.
He explained that the efforts will result in a comprehensive study by RETD on infrastructure development in Langkawi. Although we do not comment further on this plan, it is expected that the LRT system will start from the Kuah Ferry Terminal and travel to Chenang Beach.
“This MoU is part of the state’s economic agenda as proposed by Menteri Besar of Kedah, and the Korean company is an experienced company in infrastructure development. “We want the infrastructure to be developed and at the same time the commercial center is also developed. This is the model that RETD is exploring to enable a new form of development in Kedah State,” he said.
He added that due to the expertise it has, the Korean company is expected to have a complete picture of the potential in Langkawi for the next step within three to six months.
According to him, RETD is a company with high reputation and the national government also wants to bring in the technology that Korea uses to develop its cities.
“Basically, we will look from Kuah Jetty to the tourist destination in Langkawi. But it will be gradual. With this planned development, we finally have the best system network in Asia.
“We want to bring about big changes on the island of Langkawi so that Langkawi remains one of the best islands in the world,” he added
