Jeep and Marathon Watches Team up for Military-inspired Timepieces

  • Jeep is collaborating with Marathon Watches to create a watch collection inspired by the Wrangler 1941 Limited Edition.
  • The General Purpose Officer’s Series watch is inspired by the watch issued to Allied military personnel during World War II.
  • The Search and Rescue series features a number of Jeep-inspired design features and can be ordered with a self-winding automatic movement.

Marathon Watches made a name for itself in 1939 by producing timepieces for military personnel and continues to sell a line of timepieces inspired by the General Purpose (or GP) requirements of the U.S. military during World War II. According to legend, the same name, GP, gave rise to the name “Jeep”.

While there are competing narratives about the etymology of the SUV’s name, the fact remains that Jeep and Marathon Watches have a military history, so it only made sense for the brands to collaborate on a watch collection.

The brands have created two watch lines, each offered with a quartz or a mechanical movement, for a total of four different models. These are the “General Purpose Officer’s Series” and the “Search and Rescue Series”.

The former is a modernized version of the original World War II Marathon watch, with fonts inspired by the Jeep Wrangler 1941 Limited Edition. The numerals are illuminated with aged radium and it features a three-piece Crazy Horse leather strap.

The automatic version of the General Purpose Officer’s Series watch (below) features a Swiss-made ETA F06.402 HeavyDrive-PreciDrive quartz movement and prices start at $500, while the hand-wound version features a Swiss mechanical Sellita SW210-1 -Movement equipped is priced starting at $650.

The Search and Rescue model (below), on the other hand, has a military-inspired look and features such as a “red line” indicator inspired by a Jeep tachometer that serves as a 15-minute counter. The font used on the watch is in turn inspired by the Jeep Wrangler 1941 Limited Edition.

With an oversized 60-minute/120-click unidirectional rotating diving bezel and water resistance of 300 meters (984 feet), the Search and Rescue series is as tough as the name suggests. To illuminate the dial, Marathon watches use a combination of tritium gas tubes and MaraGlo technology.

The cheaper Search and Rescue watch is also available in two versions and features a Swiss ETA F06.412 HeavyDrivePreciDrive quartz movement and costs $1,200. The self-winding version of the watch features a Swiss Sellita SW200-1 movement and costs $1,500.

“We are extremely proud of this unique collaboration that reflects a shared heritage of shared values and legendary history in our Jeep x Marathon Officer and SAR watches,” said Kim Adams House, head of licensing and merchandising, Stellantis, North America. “These timepieces aren’t just meant to tell time – they tell the story of two brands coming together based on shared values and purposeful use for consumers, uniting ‘Jeep people’ and ‘watch people’.”
