• The recall affects E-Pace models built between November 11, 2020 and August 31, 2022.
  • Dealers will replace the passenger airbag module with a new one.
  • Owners who previously paid to have the issue fixed out of warranty will receive a refund.

It seems like every two weeks a new airbag-related recall is announced, and the latest one was just announced by Jaguar and affects the E-Pace crossover. A total of 2,409 examples are involved in the United States and its federal territories.

Unlike many other airbag recalls, this one does not involve an inflator that can rupture. Instead, Jaguar supplier IAC discovered that the passenger airbag deployment flap in the dashboard had not been sufficiently weakened. This means that the airbag can rupture in an accident after being punctured by the plastic door panel.

A ruptured airbag drastically reduces occupant protection and increases the risk of injury. This isn’t the only safety issue the Jaguar poses. The carmaker says a ruptured airbag can also cause hot gases to leak, potentially burning passengers.

The affected E-Pace models were assembled between November 11, 2020 and August 31, 2022 for the 2021-2023 model years. Dealers will be notified of the recall on May 2, 2024, while Jaguar will begin sending letters to owners from June 14.

The error requires a simple fix. The dealer simply needs to replace the passenger airbag module with a new one that is capable of breaking through the out-of-spec door panel. The repair will be carried out free of charge and customers who paid for the defect to be repaired outside of the warranty will receive a refund.

The British brand has already announced a handful of recalls in the US this year. In March, a recall was issued for 2019 I-Pace models equipped with LG Energy Solution batteries, which can cause short circuits and thermal overload when charged above 85%. This represents an increased risk of fire and is a recall that all affected owners should take seriously.
