It Looks Like the BMW 4 Series Isn’t Going Anywhere After All

  • According to a new report, BMW is reluctant to discontinue the 4 Series at this time.
  • BMW remains committed to combustion engine cars and is investing in electric vehicles and hydrogen.
  • The future of the Z4 and 8 series remains uncertain.

BMW 4 Series lovers can rejoice. The report that the model was on the chopping block may have been exaggerated. A new comment from Tom Plucinsky, head of product communications at BMW North America, casts doubt on the alleged demise of the 4 Series while reaffirming the automaker’s commitment to the internal combustion engine.

Plucinsky reiterated that while the company is investing in a true pure BEV platform, it is still too early to claim that anything will be discontinued. He also spoke about the company’s ongoing research into hydrogen propulsion, which the company believes will provide a solution for long-distance driving.

The word on the street was that BMW wanted to do away with the combustion engine coupe in favor of a fully electric model based on the new Neue Klasse architecture. Speculation arose with the introduction of the Vision New Class concepts by BMW. In the meantime, BMW Blog reported that the 4 Series is unlikely to receive a new generation.

However, in conversation with MotorTrend, BMW NA’s head of product communications told the outlet that the company believes in openness to technology. “We have never said that we will completely switch to BEV at a certain point in time because we have always felt that certain markets in the country and certain markets around the world will switch to BEV faster and slower,” Plucinsky said.

He added that BMW continues to invest in the combustion technology of its cars and will continue to offer it to consumers. “If a BEV is right for you, then we can do that, we’ll build you a BEV.” If you’re still a fan of combustion engines, we’ll build those too.”

Although the comments were made in response to an inquiry about the 4-Series coupe and convertible, it remains to be seen what the fate of the Z4 and 8-Series will be. The small series models have been rumored to be in production for some time. Will we see a similar iteration of BMW’s sports car lineup, in either combustion or electric form? Watch this area.
