“If I Don’t Get a Chance…” Shubman Gill Opens up About His Selection Ahead of the Announcement of India’s T20 World Cup Squad

of India T20 World Cup 2024 On the horizon is the announcement of the squad, including the captain Rohit Sharma He should lead the team and determine the batting order. While Rohit holds the key as the opening batsman, there are numerous contenders for the role of partner alongside him.

Opening puzzle: competitors

Yashasvi Jaiswal And Virat Kohli have proven to be strong contenders for the opening spot and have continued to prove their form as they progress Indian Premier League (IPL) although they were criticized for their strike rates. Once the top order is seemingly resolved, the focus shifts to the question of whether Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill will soon secure a place in the team to be selected under the chairmanship of Ajit Agarkar.

Gill’s performances as a top-order batter are commendable as he emerged as the top run-getter in the last IPL season. With a tally of 890 runs in 17 games, he came tantalizingly close to Kohli’s all-time record of 973 runs. However, Gill has struggled in the current season of the tournament and has managed just 304 runs in nine games so far.

Shubman Gill’s bid for selection for the 2024 T20 World Cup

In a candid conversation with Sports Tak, Gill shared his ambition to represent India in the T20 World Cup. Despite his recent dip in form, he believed that the selection should take into account his previous performances, particularly his outstanding performance in the previous edition where he surpassed the 900-run mark.

Shubman expressed that every player aspires to represent their country in a World Cup. Despite battling dengue fever during the ODI World Cup 2023, he returned to the team and gained valuable experience, especially in India. He reiterated his dream of playing for India in the T20 World Cup. Regarding his own selection, he stated that he will support the selected players and wish them well if he fails to make it despite a strong performance of over 900 runs last season.

“Every player dreams of representing their country at the World Cup. At the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup, I was diagnosed with dengue fever. I returned to the team and played. I learned a lot during the tournament, especially in India. For me, it is a dream to represent India on the biggest stage of the T20 World Cup. As for my selection, if I don’t get a chance despite scoring more than 900 runs last season, there’s only one thing I can do. I’m cheering on the players who make the team and wish them all the best,” Gill said.

Balancing Act: Gill’s Focus

Gill also stressed the importance of focusing on his current duties with the GT franchise rather than worrying about selection for the T20 World Cup. He emphasized that his team needed his full commitment, especially in the crucial phase of the current season. Indulging in selfish thoughts about personal achievements, such as World Cup selection, could potentially disrupt team dynamics and hinder progress.

“At the moment I’m not thinking about whether my name will be there or not. At the moment I have been given the task of leading this team (GT). When I start to think about it, I’m not doing justice to the role I’ve been given. This is precisely the moment my team needs me the most. If I don’t give them time and start missing the T20 World Cup squad or thinking about my runs to get selected, I won’t be able to fulfill my role.” concluded the 24-year-old.
