I Scored Almost 900 Runs Last Season: Unworried Shubman Gill Sends Message to Selectors Ahead of T20 World Cup

Although the T20 World Cup is not far away, Indian star Shubman Gill insists that he is currently only focused on leading the Gujarat Titans in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024).

The right-handed batsman is in the running for the main event, scheduled to take place in the United States and West Indies in June this season. He is competing with Yashasvi Jaiswal for the starting spot in the team. And while only time will reveal his fate, Shubman Gill has made it clear that he is not thinking too far ahead and is only focused on the task at hand.

Shubman Gill is leading an IPL team for the first time in his career. While he led his team from the front, the Gujarat Titans had a very inconsistent season. With four wins and five losses, the 2022 IPL champions are currently at the seventh position in the IPL 2024 points table.

As a batsman, Shubman Gill is the second highest run-scorer for Gujarat Titans this season. In nine matches, he scored 304 runs with the help of two half-centuries. As the IPL enters the business phase, the young captain is fully focused on the tournament and is not thinking about the T20 World Cup.

“Playing for India is the greatest thing. But if I start thinking about the World Championship, then I will be doing an injustice to my current team (GT) and myself.”

“If I have to be selected for the T20 World Cup, I will be selected. But right now my focus is on IPL and how to get the best out of my team and get the best performance for my team which will also help my players.” Gill told PTI in an interview.

Shubman Gill wants to take part in the World Cup:

Even though Shubman Gill is not focused on the T20 World Cup at the moment, he has made it clear that he would like to play in the main event. The young batsman was an important part of the Indian team in the ODI World Cup last year and wants to enjoy the World Cup experience again. He also highlighted his productive IPL season last year while talking about his selection in the World Cup squad.

“Of course, as a player, I want to be there and play the World Cup and get the opportunity to represent my country at the highest level – the biggest stage in T20 cricket.”

“After playing in a World Cup last year I have gained some experience and it would be great to be able to play another World Cup. But I don’t think that far into the future.” said Shubman Gill.

“I scored almost 900 runs last season and if I have to be selected I will be selected, if not (then) good luck to whoever gets selected.” he added.
