Hyundai issues another recall of the Ioniq 6 in the USA

  • This recall affects two Ioniq 6s with faulty rear motor-transmission drive units.
  • According to Hyundai, an incorrectly tightened bolt could cause a sudden loss of power.
  • The affected models were assembled between August 19, 2023 and August 21, 2023.

The unfortunate owners of two Hyundai Ioniq 6s in the US will have to take their electric vehicles to a local dealer as they are equipped with differential gear bolts that may not be properly tightened.

Hyundai says a small batch of Motor-Gear Drive Unit (MGDU) assemblies that required differential gear bolt tightening were accidentally delivered to its Tier 1 supplier and used in production. Vehicles with a loose differential gear bolt could make a grinding noise while driving and the bolts could damage the MGDU housing and/or reduction gear over time. It could also trigger a differential lock or a sudden loss of power.

The two Ioniq 6 models affected by the recall were manufactured between August 19, 2023 and August 21, 2023.

After the issue was discovered, the MGDU supplier implemented new processes to prevent a similar issue from occurring in the future. The company now inspects bolted areas using gap measurement tools, has revised rework schedules, designated rework areas and started using barcodes to make part tracking easier.

Dealers will be notified of the recall digitally on June 18, 2024, while owners will be notified by registered mail from the same date. The two owners are requested to take their vehicles to a local Hyundai dealer where the rear MGDU assembly will be replaced free of charge. Owners will also receive a refund if they have incurred any costs related to the matter.

This isn’t the only current recall affecting the Ioniq 6 in the US. In late March, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis issued a recall for 147,110 electric vehicles sold in the United States between 2021 and 2024. Of those vehicles, 18,017 were Ioniq 6s. The recall was initiated after it was determined that the internal components of the integrated charge controller could burn out, preventing the 12-volt battery from charging and potentially resulting in a complete power failure.
