Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known as one of the most popular and respected filmmakers in the country, is now making his big web debut with Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar – a web series about courtesans set in the pre-independence era. Also making her web debut is his niece Sharmin Segal, who made her Bollywood debut with Malaal. Since the show features an ensemble cast including Shekhar Suman, all the actors shared their experiences of working with the filmmaker, with the filmmaker openly stating that he is a perfectionist.

When Shekhar Suman was asked about Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s alleged anger issues during a recent interaction, the actor praised him for his work and added that he can seem like a perfectionist at times. However, his niece Sharmin Segal disagrees with this and adds that he goes beyond that because he aims to create magic in his work. “It is the kind of word that an outsider who has never worked with him, been on his set and seen the kind of director he is will use,” Sharmin told News18 Showsha in his latest report.
She explained: “He adapts very well to change. He likes to challenge himself with different things. For him, it’s not about being perfect. He looks for rawness, magic and spontaneity. And if he were just a perfectionist, he wouldn’t have treated spontaneity and instinct the way he does. He really values these things. So I wouldn’t describe him as a purely perfectionist person.”
She further revealed that one cannot condemn SLB’s work and added, “He is a hard-working man whose persistence is unmatched.” That’s why you have to give 100 percent to keep up with him and he pushes and expects the same from them people around him. He does his best and uses all the creativity that comes to mind. “Perfectionist” is a term used for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s boxing, but he is much more than that.”
She also addressed the rumors that the filmmaker has been accused of mistreating people on set and that he suffers from anger issues. She clarified, adding, “He treats technicians, spot boys and cameramen with great respect. We don’t see it behind the scenes [the work put forth by the crew]. Actors are a privileged class. We’re not aware of it, but the art team and the lighting team come three to four hours before we get on set and leave only after we dismantle everything after we leave.”
She also claimed that there were workers who were willing to work overtime for him because of their love and respect for the filmmaker. “It goes unnoticed on most sets. But on Sanjay Sir’s set, people are willing to extend their shifts beyond 12 hours by two to three more hours. They do it out of respect for him and what he creates. I don’t see this anywhere else. So I think it’s a bit simplistic to reduce him to a ‘temperamental perfectionist,'” she concluded.
Talking about Heeramandi, the show features an ensemble cast including Sonakshi Sinha, Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Fardeen Khan, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Adhyayan Suman and Taha Shah Badussha, among others. The series is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on May 1st.
