Gwyneth Paltrow is Having a “breakdown” Over Her Kids Going to College

Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t looking forward to officially being an empty nester when her two children go off to college.

“It’s giving me a nervous breakdown,” Paltrow, 51, said recently at her In Goop Health Summit in Carlsbad, California. “If I’m honest, I started thinking, ‘Oh my God, I have to quit my job, I have to sell my house and I have to move.’ It kind of shakes things up.”

The actress shares her daughter Apple, 19, and son Moses, 18, with her ex-husband, the lead singer of Coldplay Chris Martin. Paltrow is also her husband’s stepmother Brad Falchukare the children of Isabella (19) and Brody (17) from a previous relationship.

Since launching her lifestyle company Goop in 2008, Paltrow has bolstered her acclaimed acting career as a successful entrepreneur. However, her children were always her first priority.

“My identity is being a mother. Apple turns 20 in May. So I’ve based my whole life around them and their schedules and when school starts,” she continued. “You start to gradually let go when they’re driving around or doing certain things. It’s a slower process. I consider myself really lucky because I have a close group of mother friends and we have all raised our children together. So we’re kind of in this together.”

The Shakespeare in love The actress also said that she needed professional advice to adjust to her children’s growing up.

“Psychologist-astrologer Jennifer frees said: “I want you to think of it as free birds rather than an empty nest,” Paltrow told the audience at her summit. “And that resonates. What if I was free instead of creating a sense of loss? And I was able to say yes to a girls’ weekend because I didn’t feel guilty.”

Moses is expected to begin classes at Brown University this year. Paltrow already saw one of her babies leave the nest when Apple headed off to Vanderbilt University in fall 2022.

“It was a big transition. “I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew it would be hard because Apple and I are so close and have been together all the time,” Paltrow shared exclusively Us weekly in October 2022. “But I had no idea. It was like the worst heartbreak I’ve ever had [felt].”

Earlier this month, Paltrow revealed that she has turned down several acting roles throughout her career to focus on her children.

“There were many,” she said on the Wednesday, April 17, episode Today with Hoda & Jenna. “I mean, it’s funny because it didn’t feel like a sacrifice to me at the time, but when I look back from a cultural perspective, I think, ‘Wow, if people knew I didn’t do that.’ movie or that movie, they would be pretty shocked.’”
