Mezcal, passion fruit, blood orange and agave

What is Mezcal?

Mezcal is a liqueur made from agave. It has a smoky flavor that comes from roasting the agave heart underground for several days. It is then crushed or pureed, fermented, and the liquid is distilled twice, creating the final product.

In Mexico, mezcal is usually consumed neat and not in a cocktail. However, the drink below is inspired by one incredible Cocktail we tried in Mexico (at Manta) consisting of mezcal, passion fruit juice and a popcorn flavored salt rim.

How to make a frozen passion fruit mezcalita

Our Manta-inspired version: the frozen passion fruit mezcalita! It’s refreshing as a frozen margarita with the addition Smokiness of mezcal and the intense fruitiness of passion fruit.

Pour agave over frozen passion fruit in a blender

It is created by mixing only 4 ingredients: frozen seedless passion fruit, mezcal, agave and freshly squeezed orange juice.

  • 1 (12 ounce) bag frozen passion fruit puree (seedless // we like pitaya // a 12-ounce bag makes about 1 ¾ cup)
  • 1/4 Cup Mezcal (We like the brands Madre or Del Maguey // pay attention to vegan friendliness if necessary)
  • 2 tablespoon agave nectar* (honey could work too)
  • 1 Medium Blood or navel orange, juiced (Save peels after juicing, 1 orange makes about 1/4-1/3 cup or 60-80 ml)
  • sea-salt (Optionalfor glass edge)
  • Place passion fruit, mezcal, agave and orange juice in a blender and blend until creamy and smooth. Taste and adjust the sweetness/strength of the alcohol, adding more as desired.

  • Place about 1 tablespoon of salt on a small plate to fill the rim of the glasses. Lightly rim glasses with juice by running leftover orange halves (or a lime wedge) over the rim of a glass, then immediately invert the glass and dip it in salt.

  • Divide into several glasses and enjoy! Leftovers will last for 1-2 days, but will not become “mushy”. Can also be frozen into ice cubes for re-blending later.

*Agave nectar is our preferred sweetener in this recipe due to its neutral taste.
