Ferrari wants to expand knowledge about electric batteries, but doesn't build its own

  • The company’s first fully electric vehicle will hit the market at the end of 2025.
  • Ferrari wants to generate 60% of its sales from electrified models by 2026.
  • It is not yet known what body style the brand’s first electric vehicle will have.

Ferrari wants to expand its expertise in the world of battery cells, but has no plans to manufacture them itself and will continue to rely on external suppliers for the cells it needs for its electric vehicles.

The next two years will be very important for the Italian brand. The company will launch its first all-electric vehicle at the end of 2025, and while little is known about this model, Ferrari needs to make sure it’s a good one if it wants to convince its buyers that electric vehicles are the way forward.

Speaking recently at a battery cell research center that Ferrari co-founded with the University of Bologna and chipmaker NXP Semiconductors, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said the carmaker wanted to “open cells and understand what’s inside.”

“Production will always be done through external manufacturers, based on the know-how we want to acquire through this research center,” said Vigna. “We cannot afford to think of cells as black boxes.”

Reuters understands that the new E-Cells Lab was created to strengthen Ferrari’s expertise in battery cells and will focus on electrochemistry. The site will focus on lithium-based liquid-state cells, but does not see a viable future for solid-state batteries, at least for now.

“We will use more and more cells and we need to know the chemistry,” Vigna added.

At the end of 2023, Vigna revealed that he had already driven a prototype of Ferrari’s first electric vehicle and said he was very impressed with it. Unfortunately, he did not provide any further information. What we do know is that it will be manufactured in the company’s new “E Building,” which already handles production of its hybrid models, including the 296 GTB.

Ferrari expects electrified vehicles to account for 60% of its sales by 2026 and as much as 80% by 2030.
