Lipa, 28, released her new single late Thursday, April 11, along with a music video filmed at the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain. Lipa appears to have suffered a crash during a training session as she strutted up to the high jump in a black leotard and tights. It’s not long before the backup dancers trade in their gym shorts and tank tops for swimsuits and perform a choreographed number as Lipa floats in the middle of the pool.
Lipa’s song is coming soon Radical optimismis about identifying a problematic lover before taking the plunge. “I was known for missing a red flag,” she sings at the beginning. “I’ve been known to put my lover on a pedestal / In the end, these things just don’t hold up / And it’s time for me to take off my rose-colored glasses.”
“Ooh, what are you doing? / I don’t know who you think you’re confusing,” Lipa belts out on the chorus. “I think, oh, that’s amusing / You think I’m under an illusion.”

This new song was the first that Lipa wrote Caroline Ailin, Danny Harle, Tobias Jesso Jr.And Kevin Parker – also known as Tame Impala – the musical minds helping her usher in her new era of sound. Writing the song “really broke the ice for the record,” Lipa said in the press release announcing the new song.
“[‘Illusion’ is] It’s about knowing what you’re getting into but still persevering,” she adds. “The joke is on them. It’s fun to play someone at their own game because at the end of the day you’re not going to be under any illusions.”
Radical optimism will be released on May 3rd. With her third studio album, Lipa turns away from her neo-disco sound and towards a more modern pop aesthetic. Lipa told billboard in March that she was feeling “good” ahead of the album’s release. “It feels like there’s no better word – radically optimistic.”

She also explained the concept behind the album’s cover, which shows her swimming in the sea as a shark’s fin gets closer to her. “Throughout the record, there’s this idea of chaos that’s going on around me, and I’m trying to get through it in a way that feels authentic and honest to me,” she said.
Lipa said that this album will be “sonically different” from her previous works. Mark Ronsonwho worked with Lipa on “Dance the Night,” said he’s heard some of it Radical optimism. “It’s unbelievable,” he remarked. “I think that’s why there’s the disco ball smashing in the air [‘Dance The Night’] Video, right? It feels like she’s triumphantly transforming this era of her music into whatever she does next.”
